I see a lot of people have training logs in strengthening forum. I am making one here for what I train in kungfu.

July 9th
-start off with a good warm up and dynamic stretching
-kicking steps for front kick, roundhouse, side, spinning back kick, and hook kick
this works for better kicks and better balance
-full speed: front, roundhouse, side, spnning back kick, hook kick, inside crescent, outside crescent
-slow/fast speed hand strikes: reverse punch, backfist, leapard paw, bear claw, reverse horizontal, vertical punch, reverse vertical, horizontal punch, upper cuts, 1 finger eye poke, double finger eye poke, pointer finger punch, middle knuckle punch
-daily dozen self defense
self defense moves we do on attackers but used no partner (because i have none)

To add/ change that. I meant wheel kick not lotus kick (lotus is axe kick at our school).

My left roundhouse seemed pretty bad today not sure why. I was really sore so I didnt do like last couple, and plan on doing them thursday.

Pretty disappointed with training today. But after I took a nice long stretch and felt really good.

Yeah. But I am good at sparring, so we dont focus on that in the private lessons. And since in this school I am not high of a belt at all, I got a big advantage to ppl my rank. Sparring curriculum for 8th rank (counts down from 10) is just to know how to I guess.
We spar probably once or twice a week. We havent lately though since everyone has to brush up on forms and weapons.

Thursday,
Kungfu Class

-warm up, lots of streches and ab workouts
-sparred
I think I did good. Different sparring partner then usual. Got him with the low roundhouse to high roundhouse to the face. 5 seconds later he got me with it lol. He probably won the fight but thats ok. I dont plan on beating him since he is a much higher rank and a lot older.
-worked on curriculum for testing with higher rank partner (same partner I sparred with)
-we went over bo form, then every move application for it
-chinese stance excercise, short form of tiger, movements of tiger, tension form
-self defenses (he attacked and I defended)

He says I will be good for testing

So my testing is this Saturday. I will have kungfu today (Tuesday) and Thursday. I will also go over some of the curriculum Wednesday to touch up on things. Friday I have a football scrimmage that I am hoping is really easy because I cant be worn out, I really shouldnt go but I dont have a choice.

Saturday I am going to wake up around 7 or 7:30. I will have to eat, warm up my body, and get ready. Then I will leave around 8:30 so I can get to the school around 9. When I get there I will warm up again, do some static stretches, then dynamic stretches. After that I will go over some of the forms, but just more mentally then physically.

I just want to finish all this. I am tired of going over the same things for testing. When I am done I am focusing on aerial kicks. I will be working on getting a better jump, and helping my spins in the air. I also have a kick routine to work on, so this will be my priority.

Saturday 18th,
Kungfu Testing

I PASSED! I now have a 8th lower level. Today I had no belt so its a big difference.
Good test. It was 1 hour 45 minutes long. We went through everything. My sparring was awesome. Sparred my 22 yr old friend. I got him with a lot of my kicks so it looked good to the spectators.

So now that testing is over I am focusing on the following:

Everyday- practice some sequence of aerials, spinning aerials, and some normal kicks

Monday- requirements for 10th lower level
Tuesday-class
Wed- requirements for 9th lower level
Thursday- class
Friday-requirements for 8th lower level
Saturday- class
Sunday- requirements for 7th lower level (dont know them yet)

This is with football going on. So there is no weightlifting days. When football ends, I am going to have to focus on just aerials and weights, only forms on weekends.

I had to email my sifu telling him I wont be going to kungfu until football is over. Its just way to much for me. Its to hard to go from football to two hours of kungfu to homework. So I should be back in a couple weeks and be training extremely hard when that comes.

Kungfu Class
7-9

-warm up
-Short form of the Tiger (good)
-Movements of the Tiger (1 mistake)
-Tension Form (forgot a lot)
-Bo Form (forgot a lot but I picked it up at the end)
(Now that I am back I am going to get all these good again. Just going to take a couple days to get back on track.)
-Sparred (Preston: college, shorter than me, stronger)
Tried working on my defense tonight. Saw the moves coming so I blocked most of them. Got better at moving side to side then back and forth. Next time we spar I am going to work this again.
-Partner Drills
-Dragon block- they throw a punch and we used a dragon block (kind of a loose circular motion block) to go into a punch
-Double Dragon block- threw two punches and we did the same thing but with two blocks.
-Dragon block against Roundhouse punch
-Dragon block against kick- grab the kick, dragon block/swing the foot toward them and around, come in with attacks

Hey man whats up. I have a question. Have you ever been into a real fight? or have you ever sparred full contact with a real Karate, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, muay thai practitioner at all? I'm asking because im intrigue on how many of those techniques really work in a real situation. Don't take it the wrong way im not here to discredit your training, Art or anything like that. I'm not here to judge you. I ask because you seem to train alot and i was wondering if it's paying off. you mentioned that you don;t need to sparr because you are good at it but Sparring should be a regular routine in order for you to really express yourself and learn how to relax and find out what techniques work and dont work(nobody is ever good enough at sparring). Because trust me in a real situation the first thing you gunna do is make a fist and forget about everyother hand technique you've practiced.
It just human nature.

Bow out with respect from a Bagua Zhang/Taekwondo/jujitsu/judo martialist.

Hi,

Did I say I dont have to spar? Haha sorry I must have meant to write something else. I love sparring, we spar almost every class at my school.
No I have never gotten in a real fight. I have sparred full contact though, we do at my school. I think I wrote about sparring one of my fellow students who did competition in Muay Thai in Thailand.
Most of the things I practice are just simple techniques that I try and get perfect, so if I do get into a fight I can atleast have those naturally.

Kungfu Class (2 hours)

-warm up 15 minutes
-sparring 30 minutes
I sparred Bryan. If you remember my post from last time I sparred him, I got my a$$ kicked. Last night, I got my a$$ kicked less. I did a lot better defending his attacks and not backing up. I had good counters as well as fairly good attacks (just have to stay in a good guard when i move in). He knocked me to the ground a few times though (on the concrete). Finally got blood on my belt!
-self defenses 1 hour
-wrist locks
-against grabs, punches
-foot locks
-against kicks
-2 different types of foot locks but both brought them to the ground

-Twisting Tiger
-Bo Form

-practiced my punching power on my Bob dummy. I worked on technique the most. I made sure I twisted my hips, kept my elbow straight for power. I also directed my energy to my fist and tried delivering it to the dummy (yes I believe this can work). The technique worked and I knoncked down the dummy each time.

I threw up in class today, so that wasnt good. But afterwards I felt a lot better. I am done with Saturday classes though, because of this. I think its to early for me and I either prepare too much or not enough, so it doesnt end up right.

-attack: close range double punch then hook punch defense: 2 close pai lum blocks, 3rd block was more of a strike to their bicep stopping them from getting the hit
-same thing but on the 3rd strike, slid their arm into a lock. From there me and my partner were finding different ways to use this lock and where it would hurt on the opponent.

Hey Whitedragon I think it's time to try you out. It seems you been training alot so I figured that you must be really good at what you are doing. I am not challenging you, well maybe I am lol, but not in a bad way just a friendly match. I just like it when individuals train or seem to be training because it shows dedication to the arts and oneself. I was just wondering if all the training that your doing is paying off.

Hi Effrain.
Yes I think all the training pays off. The last year I have learned everything I know about Pai Lum and practiced it, everyday in the summer. I train for self defense purposes, but also work on technique in my forms (making sure I do everything the right way when I pracice). I can see myself improving when I spar in class...

At the moment, no I don't
I love my life just now and training in China is the best thing I have ever done. It's difficult and sometimes I wonder if I'm doing the right thing but I've worked back home non-stop for the last 10 years doing things for other people and now it's time I did something for myself. I'll be living and training here for at least the next 2 years. I don't regard doing something I love so much as a chore. Every day I get to play with weapons, practice my forms, get fitter by the day, cultivate my qi, spar with my fellow students, learn the Mandarin language and talk with my Sifu. It's a dream come true!!! Even though I'm training hard, it's like a holiday, a break from reality, like I've pressed the pause button on my life.
Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm awake
Anyways, I found this site by accident whilst looking for stretching exercises and I must say that I am thoroughly impressed by what I have read/seen here. A big thanks to all of you for such excellent and informative work
I'm off to do some forms

Well depends on what style you do... You seem to do a lot of fancy kicks, so that is probably a major part of your curriculum. I like how you practice your basic kicks a lot; I do the same thing, just trying to perfect things I already know.
But if your looking for a more self defense style I would say add in more punching work, and bag work. Although maybe thats not what you do kung fu for, and in that case its nice.

Lately I have been trying this approach to my training:
-long time stretching (trying to achieve splits)
-15 minutes strikes (sections hand strikes, combos, bagwork)
-15 minutes kicks (pick 3 kicks and go over them on the bag or BOB)
-30 minutes forms (usually 2)

-in between sets of working out I do my self defenses

Wednesday-Thursday

For some reason, my whole lower body has some sort of pain. My shins are killing me every time I take a step. My hamstrings and quads are extremely sore, I dont know why. So I am taking it easy, and lightly stretching. Waiting for it to heal before I work out.

I was thinking that could be what it is from. Sprinting in a parking lot for a pretty good distance isnt the best idea. However, I used to always run during football season, so I wouldnt expect it to be this bad.

Pretty much they are self defenses against certain attacks... The attacker will do one of the 18 (I dont know why its daily "dozen") attacks and you use the defense against it.

There are defenses against
-lapel grabs (1 and 2 hands)
-wrist grabs
-headlocks
-chinese strangle hold
-obviously punches
-chokes
-bear hugs

There are more than one defense for most of the attacks. Eventually you work on them enough that they become second nature, and are actually effective.

I have not posted anything in a while but here is what has been going on:

I finished Dragon Plays With the Seven Stars, a form. I recently started Flowing Motion One. It seems like a really cool form and am already hooked on it.

I have finished the Purple belt self defenses, finally!!! It has been about a year of learning them, and proud to finally be able to move on to the more advanced ones.

I started Plum Sword 2. I have not got very far into it, but its going to be a touch form. There are tons of spins, and it is hard to do a form when you can not see straight.

In tai chi, I am learning Short Form. I was out for a while during weight lifting, but it is nice to be back training in tai chi.

I finished Flowing Motion One, favorite open hand form so far. There are two drunken steps in the form that need a lot of work, but other than that I am not having much difficulty with it.

I finished Plum Sword Two which was a pretty short form. The hardest part was rolling with the sword in between my legs on the concrete, but that just took my teacher making me roll over and over again.

In Tai Chi, I got done with Short Form... needs lot of work, since tai chi is relatively new to me.

With my free time, I have been practicing my breaking with the concrete you can buy at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

I recently finished learning Prance of the Panther. This is a hard style form, most likely originating from Kenpo.

I got done with Nunchaku form, and started another plum sword form. This form can be done with a plum sword or katana, however, there are differences between the 2 forms.

In t'ai chi, I finished Yang Style Long Form Part A. Hopefully, I can incorporate the flow and proper breathing into this form.
