Hi All, was just wondering about everyone's views on a good guard position for free sparring or guards in general?

The one that works for you. Some people prefer a high, tight guard. Others prefer a one up/one down, others prefer an extended guard, etc........ Any of them can work. Depends on what you do. Related thread here: http://www.fightingarts.com/ubbthreads/s...=0#Post15923380

I think a good guard depends on the person you are fighting or sparring. If you are fighting someone who punches a lot I would keep a high guard. Against someone who kicks, I do a one high on low. A good way to practice your guard is stand in front of a mirror. Get in your guard and try and see where they would be able to hit you. Try different guards and seen which one protects you from different styles.

I prefer a good open guard to a closed guard. Just depends though. Both are important to learn but the open is more important, imo. -John

I always use a guard with both hands up and tight. I would advise everyone who is beginning sparring or beginning competition to do the same. As you get more experienced and better at other elements of defending, e.g. slipping, bobbing and weaving and evading, then you can change the guard a certain amount to suit you.
Personally though, the high guard just works for me, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah I use that guard if the person punches a lot. If they kick though I need to guard my stomache more because I can block high kicks better than high punches.

I find that if my elbows are tucked in properly, then i have no problems defending against kicks when using a tight guard. At most I have to drop the forearms a bit, but generally it is very difficult to get a clean shot at the stomach without catching some forearm/elbow.

Thanks a lot guys you really helped, i'm only beginning to get into sparring and the high tight guard seems to work best for me at the moment so i'll stick with that.
i'm always a sucker for a front kick to the stomach tho =( lol

If you see the front kick coming try and jam it up with your leg. It is probably the easiest way to block kicks.
