As we know, movie studio's are always keen to re-do a good idea. sometimes it works (Carpenters 'The Thing', 'The hills Have eyes', 'Dawn of the Dead'), and sometimes it doesn't (Van Sant's 'Psycho', 'The fog', 'the Wicker Man').
We shortly will have Rob Zombie's version of 'Halloween', of which I am quietly optimistic, and a new version of 'Escape from New York' will shoot with gerrard 'leonidas' Butler playing Pliskin.
There are, however, some films that I think it should be illegal to remake. Moments of cinematic perfection that must not be tampered with for a modern generation. I will start the list off, feel free to add or disagree as you see fit.
The Deer Hunter The Exorcist Evil Dead The Good the Bad and The Ugly The Longest Day Blade Runner Enter the Dragon Butch cassidy and the Sundance Kid Easy Rider Night of the Hunter Lawrence of Arabia Dr Strangelove Clockwork Orange Alien/s
The above I consider unbeatable in their existing form, either for a specific performance, or due to having captured the culture of the period they were filmed in.

Whoever thought to re-do "The Shining" should have electrodes placed to sensitive parts of their body. Totally agree about Enter the Dragon - off limits. Others: Apocalypse Now 2001: A Space Odyssey

The Hannibals should be left alone. I agree with LotR. I think it's about time we stop with the Dawn of the Dead type movies. I just saw a preview for one with Nicole Kidman. "The Invasion". Reminded me alll too much of DotD.
300 is perfect for the Spartan stories [300 Spartans...] No need for anything further.
I'm satsified with King Kong from the recent one, I think we should let the story be.
For the ones that DO need a remake: Godzilla. Godzilla. Godzilla.

Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, anything by Monty Python, I'll second Star Wars (leave the original trilogy alone, burn the prequels in the hottest fire you can find ), Pleasantville (first original concept in years), The Majestic, Good Night and Good Luck.

You know, I had not even considered LOTR, the Star Wars series (old or new), or The iNdiana Jones movies as remotely eligable for this thread. The very thought of them being re-made is inconceivable to me.
Apparently, they are remaking Hellraiser now, so I guess nothing is sacred to the evil that is the hollywood producer.

Oh no, I didn't realise Star Wars has been remade... it's called Eragon. Imagine the Force has wings and a long tail and that'll give you an idea.
I was reminded that there was once a suggestion to remake 'Cinema Paradiso' with Bruce Willis and macauley Culkin (it was a few years ago).
Therefore I'd like to suggest NO European/non-Hollywood film with a scrawny, undernourished kid in it gets remade by Hollywood.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was actually good. At least one of the better high school/drug/sex movies. And you have to give it a plus for Phoebe Cates....damn, she's cute!

Butterfly... you are sooo right about "Ice Cold in Alex" et al. Add to that "The Hill". The only really untouchable film with Sean Connery.

Death Wish.
Although, that seems to be the angle they're taking with "The Brave One".
