Hi, my name is Winston and I take Shaolin Kung Fu from my teacher. I joined his class in about October 2006, but I injured myself in February 2007. When I first started my class he went straight into it. I didn't know what was going on. Luckily, I took karate(and still am) and knew kinda sorta what was going on. He didn't teach the basics or the foundations. I found this very odd, and sometimes when people execute the technique wrong, he doesn't correct them.
He doesn't teach step by step like in karate. The basic class goes like this
30Min- Warm-up: Jumps,Stretching,Etc.
30Min - Forms.
I was wondering if this is odd. Does anyone else take Shaolin? His website is
Thanks for the responses.

That's a lot of warming up. I can't really comment on how it's done because I don't take shaolin kung fu, but, after reading his bio, I find it slightly suspect that he mastered the curriculum at age 11. That's 5 years from when he started training and quite young.
I'm not trying to say he can't do it,'s curious is all. Anyway, if you don't feel you're learning right, then you should move on, but if you already know the basics from your karate training and feel he is teaching you well except for that, then stay. Although you make him out to sound not so competent.

He began studying Shaolin Kung Fu at the age of 6.

By 11-years-old, Shi Xing Ying had mastered the Shaolin curriculum and was qualified as one of the very few instructors allowed to instruct Shaolin Martial Arts on behalf of the Shaolin Temple.

What?! He mastered the entire friggin' Shaolin curriculum?! GTFOH.

How many styles are contained in the Shaolin curriculum? Jeez, I studied ONE style for 15 years, and didn't even come close to learning the whole thing! That would be like me saying I mastered the entire American karate curriculum. Ridiculous. In 5 years, no less - at the age of 11?

This is Bullshido of the HIGHEST caliber. Run, don't walk, from this school.

I've been traning in one style for25 yrs I don't belive I've masterd it yet.At 11 yrs old what can you do really?Your luckly if you can make your bed by 11 let alone master all of Shaolin Gong Fu..Besides,what this monk does is not traditional shaolin it wu shu unless you into that its a waste of time learing it.Your better off learning Karate at least that is a real martial art.The realShaolin is no longer in the temples anymore. The government took care of that a long time ago.

If he mastered the entire curriculum in that amount of time at that age then he must not have been training it for fighting. You can learn a lot of forms in 5 years but it takes a lot longer to do them properly and train how they are applied.

This is gonna sound like I'm talking out the side of my neck. But to a Karate student a Kung-fu class will feel mixed up they build the body and train mind, you really don't know what you are doing until way later. The Kuen re-enforce the felxibility of the body to do the techniques eventually. Theres a lot of mind body connection.

In Karate they teach defined moves to use early, they eventually define the moves in the kata. Its the design of each system, Karate is a short cut to some of what Chuna-fa is.

Your Sifu is not a Master of Shaolin (IMO) in the sense of Mastering the entire Shaolin system he is probably a 1st or 2nd slash advance level student in that short a time, and has agood grasp on 1 or 2 methods. He is adequate to train others in the physical and the basic moves. You will get into some self defense techniques along with two man forms, weapons and eventually sparring. All this is basic Shaolin that takes years to learn let at long Master.

With your back ground in Karate start seeing the moves in the forms, you will be ahead of the game, though they may have a different meaning when he shows you the moves. Forms can have numerous interpetations.

May I asked how did you get hurt if there is no contact, learning break falls???
