Russ and Steigner sensei's both have aquired really nice quwa. That is probably where they got theirs. On my next trip to Okinawa I plan to purchase a few of the farming tools from a small hardware store I know of in Kochinda.I bought a couple of pairs of kama there on my last trip.Last I heard Russ and his wife were still in Malayshia. He is also a student of Nine Ancesters Gung Fu.He is a ball of energy in the dojo and trains hard at whatever is on his mind at the time.

Hmmm...is the Malaysian Tournement going on right now? Thought it was in November...and that Kimo sensei would be going...as well as Lui Chang.

Lucky you...to be going to Okinawa. I hope someday to get there...maybe train with Yamashira (sp?). Just learned that a friend of friend has a bungalow in the capital...so I'm considering trying to go there next year. I'd love to know the name of the place you are getting the quwa. PM me if you prefer.

Thanks.

Kimo did not go,Steigner sensei told me friday evening that Kimo and Lui Chang would be coming to Florida soon. Can hardly wait,I have not met Chang sensei yet but Steigner sensei says very impressive things about him.I do noy know the name of the hardware store in Kochinda. It is a small village shop and probably does not have an internet settup.I had planned to go there next year but Tamayose sensei plans to have his new dojo finished in 2009so I will wait till then. The place we stay is in Kochinda at the south end of the island it is close to Tamayose sensei's home in Ozato. It is a business hotel,1 room for rent with 2 bedrooms(hardwood floors for beds)1 tatami room.and a small kitchen dining room living room area.Nakamura Seiyu's dojo is on one floor.A massage parlor on another floor and Tiffany's Lounge on the first floor. We have stayed there several times and they are used to us and know us by names now.Home away from home sort of anyway,I have beds at home. The hardwood floors get rough on the shoulder blades and hipbones after a couple of weeks. The hardware store is about three blocks down from there just past the sanchin shop and about two blocks before this really good restaurant.I cannot read Japanese so the names on the shop signs don't help much. But there is a bank, grocery store, book store, coffe shop etc.all in walking distance.

why are nunchaku illegal in some states? They are as dangerous as knifes, guns etc . Arenīt they. so why would you want to make them illegal ?? I just canīt see the point in this.

I'm just throwing this out there but I suspect it has something to do with them being single purpose, easily concealable, and very dangerous. That's quite a combination.
By single purpose I mean that there are other practical reasons why you may have a gun or knife, etc. but not for nunchaku.
It is odd that I can carry a list of other weapons legally before these. I guess there haven't been many people injured in random sai incidents! (Outside of training that is!)

Actually, if you separate the two ends, they are completely legal for transport. Of course it still looks a little odd.

A government declaring a weapon illegal is a reaction.

Every 'state' who has banned the nunchaku did so because young people started beating on each other with them, period. Those who have to clean the bodies up don't like that and the people's representatives in defense simply ban the weapon and place extra pentalties on it's use to try and give 'people' a reason not to do so.

The fact movies glorify the thing never helped. If Bruce Lee had laid off the nunchaku it would never have been banned.

This is about as universal a response that exists. About 20 years ago the police in Okinawa requested the karate instructors to stop teaching kama. Seems the young people were using them to carve each other up (and as every house on the island has them for gardening, the access was universal.

In facetwhat has been banned is varied from state to state. In the state of Massachusetts if you kick someone with your shoes on you will be charged with weapons battery, the shod foot (I've seen the charge included in different assault cases).

Remember government's don't wake up and think 'let's ban something', it normally takes some idiotic behavior by some of it's citizens to make the point first.

Personally I think the issue is don't ban weapons, just make it clear the government won't clean up the bodies or the mess if they're used. Instead when the perpetrator is caught they should have to then clean up the mess and probably spend life behind bars too in a 3' by 3' cell. But I'm a gentle type of guy.
