I've been trying to work on my leg strengthening, particularly the ability to hold one leg out straight infront of me for long periods of time. I suck at this. I can hold my leg out to the side or back kick easily, but i feel like I have this huge mass of weight on my leg when i'm trying to hold it out in a straight kick. So which exercises and stretches will help me strengthen this?

My goal is to eventually be able to hold my leg out higher then my head.

Just curious as to why you want to be able to do this? I mean, it's possible definitely but apart from show, it doesn't serve much practical purpose. It probably won't make your kicks much more powerful because it's a different kind of strength.

I feel it is a basic skill in which most MAist's should be able to accomplish. Unfortunatly, I am not that great at it.

I think your best bet for learning how do accomplish this feat is to go to a gymnastics coach or dance instructor. You don't have to join the class but they should be able to give you some good advice. It's not really a martial arts sort of thing. Maybe that skill is usefull in some techniques I am not aware of, in that case, your martial arts instructor should be able to help you. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Shouji, I actually disagree with "everyone." What you are trying to accomplish is a great Martial Art skill to have. Being able to hold you leg steady in any kick and at any height will allow you precision when you are actually kicking at full speed. This is something I've been working on for a couple of years now and it is hard.

For both, front and side kick, I worked on executing them very slowly with ankle weights on. I did several repetitions every day, maybe 15 or twenty. I did them over a chair or a kitchen counter, which caused me to load the knee formally and high in each kick. Also, try to use only your hip and leg muscles. Do not lean for counter balance—this will defeat the whole purpose of the exercise.

Another good way of working on this, is doing just what you want to achieve—holding your leg up. It's hard, but believe me, you will get it eventually.

Great! I hope it works for you. It was really hard and frustrating for me at first, but now, I see that it was worth it. I am working on my side kicks right now. My school is in Tyson's Corner. Where is yours?

Kicking is a dynamic motion and this - like the ability to do the splits won't help your kicking, it just looks really cool.

You can someone with average flexibility and reasonable fitness and get head height kicks within 4 - 6 weeks using dynamic stretching, you can make these more powerful using dynamic strenth exercises. Within months you should have powerful and accurate kicking skills.

But.. if you do want it, static active stretching is key here, it is the ability to hold out the leg e.g. if you are doing it front of you, by using your hip flexors and thighs while relaxing your hamstrings. Quite difficult to do, but can get results pretty quickly.

You can achieve this by doing leg raises e.g. reps of 5 or 6 then on the final one hold your leg in position for 5 - 10 seconds while relaxing the opposing muscle.

Please note, this type of exercise puts a great amount of strain on your back, so make sure you are in good condition.
