Hey everyone. I found a stretching machine for a cheap price that im going to buy. Its hard for me to do the side splitz stretch b/c i have tight hip flexors. I was just wondering if the stretching machines will stretch my hip flexors also?

It will help, but the best thing to do is to find a stretching buddy to push your leg around when you're stretching. By yourself, it doesn't feel like you can move your leg that far, but sometimes it's just because those muscles are too weak to move it that way yet, and you really have a lot more give there than you thought you did. But like all partner stretches, have a safe word or something so you don't have to explain to the emergency room how you possibly got your leg in that position.

In my opinion, stretching machines are not worth the price. Quote:

What kind of exercises do you do to help this? It's quite possible that your hips just aren't strong enough, which can be solved with a hip abduction/adduction workout (hip flies)

Side stretching kick (swing leg up sideways) Deep boucing front stance Lay on my back and pull one knee at a time to my chest (both dynamic and static) Theres a few others thats too hard to explain

drop the deep bouncing front stance. gentle and slow bouncing is better - but even then it is still a ballistic stretch.

a really good static stretch for hip flexors is called the pigeon pose in yoga. Sit indian style, then leave one leg bent in front of you and take the other leg and put it straight behind you with your kneecap touching the floor. once you're in this position lean forward and try to put your chin on the ground. this will serisouly stretch your hips and glutes. once this gets easy, reach back straight over your head and grab your foot like this: http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/863_1.cfmlean forward in the above pose to get a good stretch on the hip flexor of the leg behind you.

There is no need to use machines - and I would never advocate the use of a partner to stretch.
I acheived a full split without any machines or partners and I have helped many others gain full splits using the Kurz method. www.stadion.com/column.html
