Doind side splits wont make your kicks higer. Kicking requires dynamic flexabilty not static.

With that said, to do the side splits pracitse it more. A good tip is to stand on pieces of paper. It helps remove friction so you can get lower.

Static is relaxed stretching, ie lying in a position and holding it.

Dynamic Stretching is moving the joint further and further past its maximum motion through swings. Such as side leg swings.

Dynamic stretching will also allow you to kick head high without warming up.

Im sure someone else can put Dynamic flexablitiy into better words for me.

thanks alot guys...so i guess we only do the dynamic stretching when we are gonna do kung-fu...we don't really do that when we are gonna practice TKD or anything else...

I don't have my side split -yet-, but I'm pretty close. Usually when you do a side split, you have your legs kind of straight out. I kind of have my lower legs behind me, so it looks like I'm just going down on my thighs. It works pretty well.
