Has anyone heard of active stretching????? I'm not an expert, my PE teacher jsut talks about it alot. But pretty much, it's a new form of stretching where you only hit that stretch "zone" for only about a second, then you return back to the starting position. Does anyone know anything about this?????

He's probably talking about AIS (Active Isolated Stretching). It's a controlled range of motion stretch, that unlike traditional passive stretching, isn't held for 10-30 seconds.

An example would be lying supine, raising one leg straight up, and using a short length of rope to assist in stretching your hamstring; prior to gently pulling the rope, you are counter-contracting your quads, hips, and abs---this essentially forces your hamstring to relax, enabling you to stretch it further.

He also may be talking about dynamic stretching. Hard to tell unless he has explained himself.

Either way, those are two of the best types of stretching out there.

I've heard about active stretching but what you're talking about sounds like dynamic stretching. Maybe your gym teacher just calls it by the wrong name. Heh.

lol mayble your right and my gym teacher doesn't know what he's talkin about. hehe but anyways, i have heard that dynamic stretching can cause muscle tear and other problems......... it doesn't seem like a great form of stretching.

ANY form of stretching can cause injury if not done properly.

Studies have shown increased muscle weakness when passive static stretching was done prior to exercise---I can quote references out of Science of Sport Training by Thomas Kurz.

There are various types of stretching, and dynamic stretching has to be probably THEE best for martial artists.

There's many posts here on dynamic stretching, and reading material on the front page of fightingarts.com.

Check it out, you'll be educated and change your tune, I promise you

Sounds almost like ballistic stretching to me...

Pretty much; fine line between ballistic and dynamic.

If you watch Olympic sprinters prior to a race, some still use ballistic stretching. Not for the novice, by any means.
