These training methods were developed over centuries by people who had to depend on their martial arts skills for their lives - not games of patty cake in the sports arena like we see today. They have survived for many centuries because they work. I have explained in medical terminology why they work to strengthen tissue which was the topic of the post.
If you wish to dismiss thousands of years of practice because you are innately talented and wish to follow the disciplines of the latest book or video or you think they are stupid because you think they are stupid, all I can say is "Well done and good for you!" The rest of us may not be so clever or believe that just because something is modern it is good. I remember a time when modern medicine decreed cigarette smoking was healthy and used as a treatment for asthma!
These training methods will continue to work long after the latest flash in the pan video or book is but a foggy memory. I don't think you will be able to get the British government to ban them. I don't think a lawyer will help you. And you can tell your Mum if you like. But this little 50-year old lady is going out now not to seek just what the Masters knew, but also what they sought. Yours in budo. Kunoichi.

If you want to carry on doing what your doing, fine.

But remember, it was common practice to stand on/jump on people legs to get them into the splits (I've been to clubs where that is still practiced) - would you still partake insuch activity?

If you want to become an effective warrior there are plenty of arts that have been around for 1000's of years that do not participate in this sort of conditioning and are equally as effective.

I think there is a difference between flash in the pan and sitting down and reading around your subject and making knowledgable decisions.

I have read the bubishi and the book of 5 rings, in contrast I have read Geoff Thompson, Jamie O'keefe - further from that I have read many articles and books on sport science and how the body works, especially in regard to Martial Arts training.

I have done the reading, wide reading (including qi kung and the various feats that they partake) and I came to my own conclusion, that I want to be an effective full contact fighter and I want to have some ability to street fight (which I adapt from the sporting side of Martial Arts).

As for training, conditioning I did my homework and I am stronger and faster than I have every been, I am not a natural at MA and it's taken a lot of hard work to find the path that I am now on.

I think blindly following anything without question is bad, I questioned this topic and came to my own conclusion - that it is outdated and does not add value to Martial Arts training.

I would never have got the standard of strenght and flexibility I have now through traditional methods.

I would like to say, I have nothing against traditional arts and trained in one myself for 10 years.

I will say that practices such as the conditioning mentioned here and forcing people into stretches does not have to be included in your traditional martial arts training to make your system complete and effective.

In my honest opinion, i'd say find what suit's you best, find your own way... if you enjoy this school and are willing to take the risk's of this type of training then keep at it! If you feel there is something wrong then stop.

Remeber that you are there at your own free will, so do what you feel is best for yourself.

Remember that when in a stance, the muscles used to maintain that stance will be tensed, others will be relaxed. You want that kind of control over your body.

Just personal experience here - I've found doing strength exercises is a good way to get conditioned against taking hits. Doing lots of crunches for example builds up the abs which can act like a kind of body armour against strong hits.

Same thing with the legs - I'd rather build some muscle using weights to protect them than kicking flabby thighs
