ok guys, its the sunday after the canadian ITKF nationals and im beat. i got the chance to meet up with some friends from last year and meet some new ones, all in all it was a great weekend, lots of great food, friends and laughs.

the morning of the competetion i was ready to hop back on the plane and go home, my stomach was doing back flips and i was feeling light headed. wow, nerves....

anyway, i managed to bring home a gold medal in kata, i preformed hiean godan and bassai dai for the win. then another gold in free kumite, 3 wins - 0 losses. bad ass. lol. the rest of team newfoundland brought home 7 medals in total, all are proud.

i'll try and get the video up soon, the 2 kata and the 3 kumite matches. i look foward to the comments when i get it posted. thanks boys!

here it is! it took me a while to figure out how to work this devil machine and get it hosted. its hosted on google video so tison should be able to have a laugh at it, since i never offended his king once in the whole thing, lol.

the "comemtary" you hear during the video is my sensei doing teh recording for me. she's like family so she kinds gets into it a little bit, lol.

if you want my opnion, the kata are weaker then they should be. im happy with the way things paned out, but i know im made of tougher stuff. oh well, back the the dojo. and im happy with my kumite as well. my hands were down alot, alot. but i felt confidant with the guys and my ability to read there advance. its also alot more controlled then it was last year. i really tried to slow myself down and work the give and take stratgey i've been preaching on other parts of the forum.

its only a traditional shotokan tourniment, but i'd love to hear anything you fella's have to say about it. just please, no trash talking the psudo beard. im in college for forestry and its kind of a class project, lol. woodsmen need the face fur!!

ok, fire away ye devils. and please jkogas, keep it above the karate belt? lol

Hey SoL

You stood up and fought the people in front of you. No-one could ask any more.

Comments (Just because I'm nasty)

Poor stances.
Robotic movements.

Fight with you hands down and it'll develop into a habit that will get your head taken off one day. Practice good habits.
Robotic, stiff techniques. Man, you gotta loosen up.
Poor movement. Were your feet nailed to the floor?

I have no doubt that having looked at the vid yourself you're already working on all of the above.

Good luck
John L

I don't know much about Shotokan kata, but your sensei seemed happy about your performance, so who am I to judge?

About your kumite...

Is there a rule in traditional Shotokan tournaments that you can't move around? It seems better to me to be light on the balls of your feet so you can react more quickly to your opponents' movements.

You do a reasonable job of stuffing your opponents' attacks with that right hand reverse punch. That said, you should consider working on some combinations of punches, maybe with some low kicks to set-up. Single techniques are great--IF they hit. As far as keeping your hands up, I dunno. It looked like semi/no-contact sparring to the head, so for that particular set of rules, your hands might be well placed. Getting used to that will not serve you well if you choose to compete outside of your style, or in a self defense situation.

Congratulations on doing so well, and having the stones to post your video for comment. I look forward to seeing your progress!
