What do you want to get out of boxing? Why are you training?

I wouldn't bother with private lessons until I had been doing it for a martial art for a while, and needed a few things tweaked.

To be honest the only people in boxing who have one on one's with a coach are professional fighters. Even Olympic squads train together.

Pending the answers to my initial questions, I would suggest group classes. At the end of the day, you are going to b sparring with someone anyway, so there wouldn't be much point in having a private lesson IMHO.

I've got a one on one trainer, but I'm lucky in a few aspects of that. He's a pro boxer here in Africa and trains me 2-3 hours every day for free. It's a pretty sweet hook-up, all I gotta do is import supplements from the states and let him train in our gym, and we're even. I don't think I could afford a one on one trainer otherwise. It's gonna suck when I rotate to Europe in a couple months and have to join a club.

I can't really compare what it's like having a one on one trainer to joining a club or something like that because I've never been in a club. I'm sort of dreading it actually. What I can say, you'd probably already guess, is that you will get a lot of attention with a professional trainer and they work you pretty hard because they really want that one person that they're training to be their pride and glory. I'd probably be better off asking the other members what it's like being in a club as opposed to having a personal trainer.

It's nice in a small country like the one I'm in now too because since he's been training so long he knows just about every pro boxer that has ever came through this country. I had a pretty intense training session with the heavyweight champ of zambia the other day. Came out sweating bleeding and wanting to cry.

I suppose there are fors and againsts for both. If you train one on one, obviously you will get more attention and the coach could really train you to your personal benifit, work the things you need to work etc. In a club you will usually have people of a similar skill level to you to sparr with, which is an upside, also you can come to be mates with the people you train with. Personally i train at a small club with about 10 fellas and 1 girl there. some of the people are pretty slack or have work commitments though and only train 1 or 2 nights a week, which keeps the classes small. I like training in a club, occasionally it's just me and the coach, which is good too. Both are good, I suppose it depends on the situation. If you can constantly get sparring partners yet train one on one with your coach, I think that would be excellent.
