When people say karate, this is what they should be referencing, not that shuri-ryu stuff on the "amen" thread.

I guess they're okay, but when people say karate, in my opinion this is not what they should be talking about. The hapkido was a contest of kicking and catching people who jump up in the air and throwing them down. That's not what I think of when I think of smart fighting principles. And for me the Goju stuff hand entirely too much closing distance with no effective clinch technique, elbows, stopping strikes to the body, or good takedowns. The attempts to knee strike and low kick were okay, but they didn't even seem to be thrown with any force at all. Again, in my opinion not smart fighting. Two people standing toe to toe throwing a lot of punches and kicks for an extended period of time is not IMO karate. Might be an okay training drill, but not one I would spend a large portion of my training time on.

Fair enough, everyone's entitled to their opinion. But these are sparring clips in the Tournament/Competition forum. Not sure exactly what you were expecting.

Well, it says that grappling is allowed in the goju irikumi, but the best clinch technique I saw was a guy grab the back of someone's gi and fire off knee strikes. If grappling is allowed in my opinion there are better ways to gain a superior position like using a single neck tie and over/underhook or double neck tie. My point is its a nice attempt, but similar to most sport karate out there. I've see other more developed styles of full contact karate as better and the goju was an apparent attempt to emualate those styles such as enshin, ashihara, kyokushin, etc.

Med, I guess I was trying to illustrate more advanced sparring than the slap-crappy stuff we see in this forum section all the time.

sparring doesn't need to be at such a long-range, but people do that at touneys for safety. That allows people with less control to spar...and it allows judges with less experience to judge.

I just threw a couple clips in this forum section to show more advanced sparring than the lil' dragon family tournament rules held at malls.

but feel free to compare it to what you do.

iri = enter, kumi from kumite = sparring, essentially inside fighting.

I've been doing more of this over the past 6-8 yrs. There are many techniques that are effective from the inside. It's just one of many ways to fight.

The concept & practice are best demonstrated in person than over a forum. It shows that karate isn't just punching & kicking.

What was scientific about that third video?

It didn't look like they were going for the most of effect with the least of energy.
