Lately I've been doing about one protein shake a day... Usually about 20-30 minutes post-workout. Usually I'll do two bananas, two raw eggs, milk, and protein powder. Sometimes I'll mix it up with other fresh fruit instead.

I'm wondering as to what people on here think of using a "weight gainer" style shake that includes protein as well as about 320 calories, 42g sugar, etc. as opposed to the standard protein mix that doesn't have all the sugars. I have a naturally high metabolism and often seem to get "the shakes" badly towards the end of a workout, so I switched to the "weight gainer" supplement simply to get some added carbs in my system to recover.

I'm not seeking to really add much weight or mass, simply to gain strength in my workouts. Since I usually eat a meal as well after a workout, I'm wondering if the "weight gainer" mix is actually worth it, or if it's just another way of me dumping 42g of sugars into my system that I maybe should do without.

Weight gainers on the whole tend to be a bad idea. If you need more energy in your day, increase your starchy carb intake with your meals, not your sugar in your drinks.

Thats true, though I do drink a mass gainer protein shake. However, I also eat about six times a day.

Wouldn't the weight gainer shake be better than a pure protein shake post workout since it contains simple carbs?

I couldnt really say, I drink my shake for breakfast and one at dinner. Before a workout I eat, and after I eat. Usually something like steak and eggs or a couple of peanutbutter sandwiches. Tuna, something with good protein in it, and I still get carbs from the bread or from the eggs.

Thanks to all who replied... definitely got some good pointers.

Chen Zen, your approach of taking the protein in the morning w/ breakfast and then eating a healthy meal after the workout sounds good to me, but the only thing that concerns me there would be that my post-workout muscles wouldn't be getting the easily digestible and absorbable protein from the shake and instead would have to get it from actual food, which could take longer to actually enter the system, due to the fact that it takes longer to digest and absorb. This is why I always thought that post-workout was the best time to drink a protein shake. Are these concerns valid, or am I off-base?
