Two seperate questions -
What percentage of the fights have you either seen or been involved in, have the combatants ended up on the ground, by intent or accident?
How many have involved weapons?

I voted 30% and 10%. This is done by my own observation and experience. The question states: Quote:
...the combatants ended up on the ground...
I don't really know if both are ment or just one. My observations show app. 30% of them both on the ground.
Often one of the combatants will hit the deck. (I guess half the time. But this is an assaumption.)

70% ground – 30% weapon My numbers are a little distorted due to the many years I worked in law enforcement. Anyone who resisted usually ended up on the ground. Same with weapons, many times employed by me: gun, taser, c-spray, sap (where I worked they are no longer allowed to carry), pr24, nightstick…

Im not real good with percentages so I didnt give a vote. Ive been in roughly forty fights. 2 that I were in went to the ground and one I was in a guy drew a knife and in another, a bat.
I didnt count any of the "fights" for competition, though Ive had nine now, and all but one went to the ground.

Almost every fight I've ever seen that wasn't immediately broken up, ended up on the ground. The reason is because rarely is skill going to be equal among two combatants. One is just going to take more of a beating than the other.
As he is taking that beating, he'll do one of several things. He's likely going to either fall and pull his opponent down in the process, or he'll fall and his opponent will remain standing. He could also fall and his opponent will FOLLOW him to the ground or, he'll grab his opponent and they will BOTH fall. A FIFTH option is that one guy will simply tackle his opponent outright, and that is a VERY common (and effective) attack strategy.
In more than 90% of the fights that I've seen, at least one of those above listed situations occurred.
NONE of them involved weapons. Why not? Because these weren't assaults as much as they were ego fights. These people were basically fighting to determine dominance.
Not that ego fights can turn into assaults either, because they can (and many more do in this day and age).
In none of the fights I've seen (and experienced) none of these involved multiple opponents either. This going back to about 1981 when I started hanging out in the wrong places with the wrong people, underage, in bars and dives in a college town. In fact, most of us simply stood around and watched it go down until it became obvious that the "winner" had been determined.
In that case we usually just pulled the guys off of each other, dusted them off and bought them beers. In SOME cases, they were even the best of friends before the night was over, believe it or not!
Human nature is basically the same although cultural differences will also be a factor. I can only speak for my own experiences.

Since I never bothered to keep track, I had to guestimate;
70% to the ground for both parties, 90+% for one of the parties go down.
20% for weapons, which include knives, bats, pipes, boards torn from a fence, ash try, crib board and a telephone.

fights (most are drunk/drug related): I voted 90% ground, 20% weapons. all of the drunk fights I've seen, both or one falls to the ground due to loss of balance - not so much from being taken to the ground.
fights (sober): 80% ground, 0% weapons
fight from assault: victim goes to ground from connecting surprize attack, with/without weapon. 90%
fight resulting in murder: victim subdued via weapon goes to ground and is killed with weapon. 99%

I voted 70%, but with the provision that ONE of the combatants fall. If it were both going to the ground, I would've said 30%.

90% ground; 0% weapons. I will echo John's post. I think that for many they learned as kids to wrestle and this is what they draw on when in trouble or get tired; go to the ground. Many people feel that they have a better chance this way to survive though surviving today is a lot different then surviving when I was a kid or young adult. Never been involved with weapons or seen this other then being booted over and over while on the ground. Thankfully I have good healthcare coverage.
