I answered 90% go to the ground for the reasons John stated. My personal battles prior to training all did. I think this is almost always the case in ego fights, but in real SD not as much, any person if they can prevent it will stay on their feet so they can apply the running away defense.

In most fights im in, its all striking. There's a few where I right out ground n pounded. But so far, none of them have been with weapons. I am only 13, and these are fights at school or outside of school. People aren't stupid enough anymore to use weapons and be jailed for assault with a deadly weapon.

The fights I've witness or been in it's 30% (90% someone will fall down), 60% for weapons.

In Thailand, most fights rarely end up on the ground as unlike most countries. May be due to the nature of Thais to strike rather than wrestle? No idea to be honest, they just seem more inclined to strike rather than to wrestle on the floor.

Another thing I've noticed is that many of the fights I've seen 60% of the time, improvised weapons were pulled to deter the dominant one. May just be specific to me, but it does seem common that the person who's giving a whopparse usually stops when the other party pulls a knife/improvised weapon on him.

30%, 60% only applies to what I've seen/experienced. The government statistics may be totally different.

As Kimo said, I think the type of fight plays a role here. The "I'm tougher than you, let's fight" kind of challenge fight I saw or was in when I was younger, all seemed to go to the ground at least temorarily. Since then, all the SD fights I've seen, I only saw one go to "groundfighting" though many went to one person on the ground being pounded by the attacker(s). So I put 50% because it goes both ways from what I've seen. I've only seen a few weapons, a pool cue, baseball bat, long stick, and one gun. ( though the gun wasn't actually a fight, just a bunch of people running trying to not get shot ) But, the weopons I saw were a very low percentage, maybe 20%.

roughly 30% of the fights i've seen go to the floor and most ended there with a ground and pound tactic. and i've only ever seen a weapon pulled twice (knock on wood), once was a modified brass knuckle with 4 inch nails sticking out between the fingers, and the second time was a fence picket with a nail in it.

the brass knuckle guy was jumped by about 4 of us, might as well stop a friend before they do something their going to regret for the rest of there life. the fence picket was used, and on the sight on blood, every one ran. far from a life threatening wound by any means, just a scratch.

with the kinds on numbers being brought up here, it brings to light the kinds of things self defence styles should focus on eh? defence against improvised weapons seems to be worth the time to train, in lue of the standard knife and club defensive tactics.
