Sounds pretty much like the cops I'm used to. Now, I know I'm going to 'get it' for saying this, but this was the dysfunctional cop I was used to:

-alchoholic
-beats kids (who grow up to become cops as well)
-cheats on wife
-corrupted (on a continuum from 'turns the other way', accepts 'freebies' from businesses, to fixes tickets, shakes down youths for pot...to straight out dealing)

To my way of seeing the original video...the bartender pushed him first...and should have had more sense.

Pushing a man who outwieghs you by close to 200 lbs becuase he is drunk and unruly may not be the smartest thing in the world but by no means does it warrant that type of beating. I dont think that should even be a consideration. The guy is a coward and an moron to attack a woman like that, let alone one who is clearly by her size and demeanor no threat to him at all.

Could it be that the type of cop you described is so noteworthy because the ones that are living a good life and just doing a good job day in and day out don't get the same news time?

Also, I agree with you that it seems there are a lot of cops that do get in one type of trouble or the other.

Here is a sad truth, it's really pretty easy to get a job as a cop, it doesn't take all that much to get the proverbial foot in the door. However, it's really pretty hard to keep that job and make it to the end of the road and actually draw a pension.

There are a lot of ways to get in trouble/get fired as a cop, and I'm not just talking about the type of guy that gets criminal charges filed on him for breaking the law.

Most of those types can only fly under the radar for so long before weeding themselves out....

Update: The cop is pleading NOT GUILTY.

He's actually saying he didn't do it. What a tool.

Un-friggin-believable. How in the hell can you plead not guilty with a straight face when you have the assault on video?

Not only did he cross the line, now he's used his official position to try to cover it up. Ugh!

What was just as disturbing as the this incident is what followed when the cop in question was hauled into court. His fellow officers surrounded him, shoved around reporters, ticketed cars with press stickers, and otherwise did what they could to harass those who wanted to see justice done. Rather than shun this jerk, his fellow officers defended him.

With this on video, he's kind of foolish to go to trial.
His best bet would be to try and plea bargain.

He probably thinks if he can get off, he'll be able to save his job. But that's not going to happen now, especially that the video is public.
