Fletch1,
By coming out so hard against this cop (or maybe soon to be ex-cop ??) you prove my point for me. He SHOULD be treated just like everyone else...no better, no worse.
Just like the MA instructor that used his position to gain the trust of parents and then molest children. After he was convicted, the sanctioning body (I can't re which one) took away his Black Belt so that he coudln't do it again.
BTW, PM sent....

I like the "hero" on his cell phone calling the cops. What a douchebag. Even if you can't kick the guys ass, you do your best and let HER get to safety.

I often get called to review dashboard and jail video when there is a question of whether an officer used excessive or inappropriate force, so I try really hard to keep a balanced perspective. As bad as some things look, you have to understand that the video doesn't tell the whole story and investigations need to go forward without bias or premature judgements.
That being said, in this video I don't see a cop. I see a drunk a$$hole just like I see every Saturday night getting thrown out of the local pool hall. The fact that he has such apparent contempt and disregard for his profession (and mine) really offends me. I'd like to be able to say the barmaid provoked him, threatened him or somehow shared some responsibility in the incident...but I can't. All I saw was an out of control drunk that was trying to hurt somebody and should face the consequences, badge or no badge.
I am a realist though. I don't think the legal consequences should neccesarily be more severe just because he happens to be a police officer. I know that he will likely lose his job and be unable to get another position in Law Enforcement. I know that this consequence is far reaching and will impact his personal and family life for many years if not the rest of his life. His troubles are just starting so, if my gut reaction that he was a "piece of trash" came across as harsh, I stand corrected.

Alright now don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying that it wouldn't have been my first reaction to give this guy a hook to the jaw out of left field and just try to knock him out, but I like to look at situations from both sides.
So this guy is a cop, and obviously making a scene already (or at least I'm assuming, I can't watch the video. Damn government computers) He's probably already made a very loud mention that he is a cop. I'm just assuming that's what a drunk cop with such low morals would do anyways.
Now for the guy on his phone calling the cops, if he knew he was a cop already there's a pretty good chance that cop is still carrying. I'm from the chicago area and I know that it's a pretty normal thing for cops to carry even off duty. If this guy is drunk and low enough to beat the hell out of a small female just for refusing him service, don't you think he'd probably be low enough to shoot someone on instinct that's proceeding to physically teach him a good life lesson?
Like I said, I'd try to knock him out before he even knew what hit him, but not everyone trains in fighting like just about all of us do, and therefore probably don't have that natural confidence, especially against a 250lb, potentially armed, cop.
Just trying to put another perspective on it.

Considering he is a COP he should be held to a higher standard. He is oblagated to "protect and serve" and that doesn't mean serving a beating for nothing. He is trained to be able to handle himself with control not freak out drunk or not.

And now, the brother of the cop who beat up the bartender is now under investigation for hitting an off duty cop from DC in a bar. The off duty DC cop needed 6 stitches and filed a complaint with his office. Apparently it was caught on tape and only lasted 6 seconds. Sounds like he was coldcocked to me. They didnt show the 6 second tape on the video I saw. They focussed on his brother and the bartender.
What is wrong with this guys family? I could talk to you and see if we can talk out the problem but WTF, hitting you while you are not looking is much more fun. And if you are a small woman, hell, that is even more enjoyable.
I know cops are under a lot of pressure but nothing justifies what happened to the bartender. And to hit another cop? WTF?
