anyway the kata i wanted to get a talk going on is at 4:25 in to it, its preformed by a guy named justo gomez from argentina and it looks great to me. i think its a really good example of sensei Nishiyama's way of teaching.

and theres a prety kool team demo of some kids doing unsu that is fun to watch.

anyway, i'd love to hear some people's feed back about it, any of it i guess, so fire away

I've never made much study of this form but I'll have a think on it and see what I can come up with.

I think this kata teaches you how to attack, a bit like bassai dai.

So far my thoughts on the main age-gedan posture are as an entry method to get into close quarter combat. The movement is designed to cover and slide to the inside or trap and press in from the outside probably best applied at a slight angle. If he opponent holds their ground the tate shuto uke is performed without a step and it creates space to punch. The fudo dachi allows you to apply your body weight against the opponent to either force retreat or hold your own position though a sanchin dachi might be a more mobile posture to use circling around the opponent. The lead knee of the fudo dachi acts a s gaurd against leg techniques and can aid in applying pressure to the opponents stance.

I think a fighter using this form as his base would try to stay off line of the opponent, using spinning techniques to avoid being blind sided and defending any attacks parrying and moving around or by smothering and rolling in.

Once inside the opponents space attack is pressed using short kicks to the shin/knee and focussed pressure (ippon ken etc) strikes supplemented by slipping and trapping and more pressure based stance/balance breaking. The basic striking premise is to "move west to strike east", i.e. if one defends high, counter attack low and vice versa etc etc..

I think as a fighting system it would combine well with
Bassai dai and Gankaku, a kind of bridge between the two. This however is just an off the cuff analysis and almost certainly incomplete if not completely incorrect. I'm fascinated to hear what everyone else has to say.

i agree as well, however the aspect of training that senesi Nishiyama likes to focus on is that the exact technique you defend against is less important then the fact that you respond with a strong body and mind. i know that sounds like suicide to alot of people, but its like learning to catch the attack befor it ever becomes a dangerous (best case sceniaro) and we do work the "slopy" attack nights from time to time, but we spend the majority of our time on this kind of training. from what i understand it's similar to kendo? i can't be sure right now.
