Which of the basic defenses do you use for each of the basic punches?

Good thread! I use many variations to deal with jabs and crosses, depending on how late I notice them.

Hooks I generally avoid if I can. Uppercuts I try to roll (rock?) with them, since they are hard to see.

Variety is good, predictability gets you hurt

Good thread!

Thanks MattJ

I feel like rambling on about my likes and dislikes today so here goes!

The copy and pastes are from this web site; http://spindelsportsacademy.com/boxingtm.htm

I’m too lazy to type it all out.

Catch:
Quote:

As a jab arrives, place your right glove in front of your face with chin down. Pivot your right foot, brace the right leg and catch the jab with your glove. Make sure your chin is down so your glove bounces off your forehead and not your nose. Catch jabs as aggressively as your opponent throws them. Recover immediately.

I was taught slightly different but this is close enough (I don’t want to come across as a nit picker know it all). Any way I don’t use this technique, I’d rather use head movement to avoid the blows and keep both hands for counter punching.

Parry:
Quote:

Its not a good idea to catch a straight right power punch. Power punches are best parried with a small slap of the left glove where the momentum can carry your opponent off balance and expose him to a counterpunch.

Just how I was taught, I don’t parry for the same reason I don’t catch.

Block:
Quote:

As a punch arrives, simply flex the knees and lower yourself so that hands automatically are raised to better protect the head. At the same time, elbows and arms drop to better protect the lower body. This is not a duck but a slightly flexing of the knees. Immediately recover to the boxers stance.

This is what I try and do if I can’t get my head out of the way in time.

Shoulder:
Quote:

A shoulder block can block a straight punch. When the lead arm drops (as to draw a punch) turn the shoulder up and into the blow.

I don’t like it, just my personal preference.

Slip:
Quote:

Slips are small lateral movements of head, neck and shoulders to avoid straight punches. The punch or swinging bag should just miss your head.Slips can be worked against a heavy bag or a slip bag. Slipping outside means moving outside an opponents body frame. Inside slips move inside the frame.

I use the slip for all straight punches (jabs, crosses, whatever) to the head. Also the slip is the foundation for my rhythm. I have a preference for short rhythm but I do mix it up a bit with long rhythm. Head movement, rhythm and footwork are the basis of my defense. That and keeping my hands up at all times!

Duck:
Quote:

Duck head shots but never uppercuts or body shots. Flex knees, duck and recover in a V motion. Keep head up and eyes on your opponent. Practice with a small
suspended bag.

Yes or a “U” motion, I duck hooks and the infamous haymaker.

Rock:
Quote:

Rocking is a sharp, balanced motion over stationary feet. Balance is maintained by rocking over flexed knees. Not to be confused with leaning, which is drawing back stiff legged and off balance.

Good move but it’s more suited for long rhythm so I don’t use it as much as the slip.

Well that’s my two cents. I probably do things different from most of you, not saying better just different.
