If it makes you feel any better, I NEVER won first place in all the years I did open tourneys. One time, I came in last place - in MY OWN SCHOOL'S open tournament - in black belt forms. One thing that I told myself before my last tournament is if I don't compete, I will never be able to compete in that tournament again. I don't mean that they won't have the same tournament next year, I mean that on that particular day and time, I will never be able to make it up if I miss it.
