Just a quick question

Hi there. I'm looking for the name of a move/technique that I've seen used in many videos etc for standing up quickly from the lying down position. The move involves swinging both your legs around in a circular motion and propelling yourself to the ground, any info would be appreciated.

If it is the movement I am thinking of, I use it pretty frequently and it comes from Northern Shaolin Kung Fu if I am not mistaken. I do not, however, recall the name of it. Sorry for being less than helpful but I do know the move to which you refer.

It's called a kip-up. Do a search, it's been covered here many times.

I think you may be mistaken Matt. I dont think he means propelling himself to his feet from his back, but rather swinging his legs in a circle and coming to his feet. Like a breakdancer.

Hard to tell from the description. "Propelling yourself to the ground".

In that case, it would be called a flare or maybe a windmill variation. I'm not sure why you'd ask about that on an MA forum though...

It's a windmill, not a flare. Flares are the things gymnasts do. If you go to Youtube and type Windmills, you''ll find what you're looking for. In order to flip up onto your feet, you just kick hard when you're on your back, and twist your upper body so you land on your feet. http://youtube.com/watch?v=CCNbJcKN24QThis is very good, professional instruction on how to do windmills, step by step.

Don't know about that, I've never seen a windmill end up on your feet, just ending back into the baby or a six step. Although it's true flares are done on your hands, rather than your back... Maybe it's a windmill into a flare then to standing up?
