The game Rainbow Six Vegas (RSV) in my opinion allowed for more strategy especially online. Online you can still run and gun but it works better if you work with your team. In this game you are a Swat Team and this is understandable.

The game Call of Duty 4 (COD4) in my opinion is a much faster paced game. The character can run for short distances and I find that it is not as tactical so running and gunning for sure will happen more. This game sort of reminds me of a lesser version of Halo where players are pretty much on their own though still may be on the same team; and with realistic weapons and of course no shielding. Plus this is an army and though there is a tactical side to this, it is not as great as Rainbow. You are dealing with much larger maps, less customization/personalization, weapons of war (i.e RPG's, Claymores, helicopters, air strikes, etc.).

I like both games but still prefer RSV but who knows, that may change as at the moment online I am only playing COD4. COD4 has things I like such as being able to knife somebody, outdoor maps where you can hide in tall grass and surprise individuals plus many more. Then there are things I don't like such as you rank up faster then RSV, you can't customize your character so everybody looks the same, rifle scopes aren't variable (i.e. 6x, 12x, etc.), you can't add more then one attachment to a weapon even though the game campaign has weapons that have this capability, plus a few other things.

Again a good game but to really understand and enjoy this game you have to play it online for which they intended it to be. The game takes 7 hours on normal and that is with having to repeat levels due to continued dying or figuring things out; meaning it could have been done in less time. I have started this on the hardest level (veteran) and will give it a go in my spare time to add the difficulty level.

For those that haven't played online, this has its good, bad and ugly. Remember you are playing with different personalities and people all over the world. Then you mix in snotty nosed whiny know it all kids and some days you want to reach through your TV and throttle those kids as obviously their parents aren't punishing them enough nor are they monitoring their kids. But if you are lucky you will continue to hook up with some good people that share the same values as you do and you can continued to play with over and over.

I have to say that whilst the games on the 360 are getting ever more impressive, i am dismayed at the longevity and investment in 1 player gaming that is developing. At the end of the day, I want to be able to immerse myself in a game and a story, I do not want to be forced to socialise with people I probably wont like, and who's incessant babble merely serves to remind me that I am a person playing a game, not part of the world I am experiencing.

I am looking forward to the new Res Evil, Silent Hill, Kane and lynch, Assassins Creed, Alone in the Dark and other, narrative driven games that will be released over the next 6 months, so that I can shut myself away from the annnoyance that is real life.

Cord,

Maybe I missed something here or misunderstood, but you wrote:

Genuinely curious, how do you define 1st person gaming? Like you, I want a good story that will suck me into the game play. That's why I don't have any online service for these games. I also find that I am more intensely fond of 1st person shooters for the same reason when done well: Immersive, involving story segregated from the rest of those with whom you might play and know little about; and generally simpler in the scope of movements you have to learn.

For those with a different take on things, there are games where multiplayer interaction might be nice, but it isn't for me. I rather make my own mistakes and enjoy the show as quickly or as slowly as I want to---not as quickly as others require me too.

Just curious about your comment since I read it as similar to my feelings, yet you decry the 1st person involvement.

No i didnt mean 'first person' gaming, as defined by not having an on screen avatar, but rather looking through the eyes of your on screen persona (Halo, doom, etc), I am talking about 'single player' gaming, being you against the AI of computer generated characters, as opposed to being in an online environment, pitted against, and teamed up with, other gamers online with you. I just dont want to do that for the reasons I stated.

I understand you now! Thanks. Then the simple answer is that they think this style of gaming, despite fondness for or dislikes to the contrary, seem to make more money for someone. So, game designers will make games for more popular consoles and the PC rather than specifically making them for those systems that are owned by fewer people. And of course, if more people are interested in a certain type or style of game, then the choir sings on....

So we are not going to have a "FA.com" get together?

I understand what you are saying. It seems most games coming out now are designed to get people online to continue to play them. Assassin's Creed you will be happy to know does not have an online play however I just read you can finish it in 5 hours which I dislike ... and am hoping that this is not true.

I always prefer playing the games first by myself to get to know the lay of the land and the controls before I go online. I was in the same thinking that I couldn't be bothered with that crap but then I tried it in July and I've been on ever since. I find it like this forum, you meet a few good people and you try to catch up to them as much as you can to play together which is enjoyable. I actually found a group on Battlebud which is gamers in the 30+ range for the most part and who I play with more then anybody else. If someday you two want to make that venture, we can set up a "private room" where only we can play as I think you would find that enjoyable.

I hope thats not true about assasins creed im getting it tomorrow and i don't wish to complete it the same day I buy it.

Also thinking of selling my 360 I just think the PS3 games coming out are going to be much better plus the online gaming is free other than the cost of the initial console I can't see a reason not too switch.
Generally all the good games are multiplatform anyway and blu ray is going to provide much more in the way of graphics and actual gameplay imo.

Am I overlooking anything here don't want to get rid of a console that im then going to have to rebuy?

Concerns re the pS3.
1. Blu Ray has yet to be crowned the victor in the HD media war, with HD dvd getting some major support. Remember Betamax vs VHS? It is not the best system that wins, its the one that is cheapest to produce for, and at the moment, that is HD DVD. Strong chance that Blue Ray could become obsolete within 3 years.

2. Programmers hate coding on the PS3, all have expressed concerns about it. At the moment, almost all but PS3 exclusive titles are coded on the 360, then the pS3 gets a port of the 360 development. Combine developers issues with the strong market share the 360 has, and you have a situation where sony have less leverage for 'exclusive' titles, and where titles appear on both, the 360 gets the better end of the stick as they can get more out of it.
Res Evil, Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry 4, all once Sony only, now across all consoles.

3. the PS3 has had a very luke-warm reception. Sales are low, and with xmas coming up, here in the UK the Wii has increased in price due to demand, and supplies are short, the xbox is holding price and shortages are expected. The PS3 has dropped in price (something the CO of Sony said would not happen till 2010 at the earliest), and there are a surplus of machines available.

Its your choice, but you would be jumping from a perfectly sound ship into a leaky life-raft.

I will get a PS3 at some point after they have reduced its size and it is down to a sensible price and it has a convincing library of games, but at the moment its a bit of a donkey IMO

So I stop on my way home from night shift at 6am and become one of the first proud owners of Assassins Creed sadly I feel like sh1t (some sort of bug), so drop into bed as soon as I get home, planning to play it when i wake up (hopefully) feeling better. 1. I wake up feeling worse, but decide to have a look at it anyway. 2. Havent even got to the title sequence when my wife comes in and stresses out having to divulge that my In-laws have bought me the game for christmas! Some days are destined not to run smooth.
The upside is that I am going to wrap the copy i bought, and give it to my mum for xmas, the downside is that I have to wait 5 weeks till I get to play the darn thing myself

Couldn't agree more. With the absolute stonker games that have come out there's no reason to get a PS3 at the moment. I've got my Wii and 360 which covers all my needs for now.
