The number one rule(s) of Martial Arts...

My instructor is fond of saying that "The number one rule of martial arts is..." replacing ... with a variety of statements, sometimes toungue-in-cheek. He'll say the rule, then follow with "If you haven't noticed yet, there's a lot of number one rules for martial arts." I was wondering if anybody out there could offer a few of their own "Number One Rules" Here are some I can think of off hand: -Don't stop to admire your own work. -Get out of the way first. -Bend your knees. -Hit them more than they hit you. and... -Bring exact change

Yeah, that's a good one. And I don't think I'd be TOO surprised, It's always funny when a form is punctuated by gasps for air. If only I didn't still have to remind myself occasionally.

"No Gaps"
Another really good one! Both my AKK/WC striking experience and my BJJ grappling follow that concept. Gap = opportunity for the opponent.

These are some good ones. I hadn't checked this thread for a couple days. Here's another one the instructor uses when people get jerky and try to force a move to work:
-Fast isn't fast. Smooth is fast.
And some others:
-You say "It hurts when I try to do that/move like that/bend that way." Well, then don't do it that way.
-Don't think too hard about doing it right, because then you won't.
-If you screw up don't just stand there and stare at your opponent. Hit them and try something else!

Not from my own experience, but from Mr Miyagi lol! He explained the two rules of Karate:
"Rule number one: Karate for defense only.
Rule number two First learn rule number one"
A bit silly in the context of this thread maybe, but an important thing to remember as to the responsibilty of being a martial art student IMHO.

First rule's eh? Talk only if it will decline the risk of violence. If it won't, save your breath and attention for what is to come. If you decide to strike, mean it. If someone deserves hitting once, they deserve hitting repeatedly. Wear a box

It is not easy , no matter what anyone says.Physicaly or mentaly. There are no fast track, one hour, one week ways to defend yourself in a real, violent situation.
leave the Ego at the door.Everything you do can be better.
Power, power, power. How can you get more power and still be tacticaly and defensivly ok? If you have to fight back, full body and mental intensity in every shot.

I have three basic rules.
1. Control. That means control your attitude, how much power to apply, which side of the street you walk on, the situation in general. 2. Go with the Power. If a kick is coming around towards your face, go the other way. Don't eat it or try to always "handle" it. If Big Bad Guy grabs a girl and starts dragging her into the bushes, and she just pulls back, she loses the tug of war. If she follows the line of the power (not into the bushes) and uses an escape technique at the wrist, she may get loose. 3. Move and Keep Moving. As mentioned earlier, don't stop to admire your handywork.
Occasionally I would add a fourth rule. If someone is absolutely determined to act like a jerk and come at you, help him...right into the nearest wall.

The number one rule in martial arts is that the number one rule changes with the situation and whether or not there are rules...

"90 percent of karate is half mental."
"The enemy is always bigger, faster, and stronger than you are."
"Posture is everything."
"Always picture a straight line extending forward from your feet, and stretching off into infinity. Why infinity? Because that's how long it will take you to get the stance right."
And this, while not strictly a rule, was the one of funniest things I've ever seen in the dojo.
Sensei: Is your gi on backwards? My sister: Ossu Sensei Sensei: Well then, I guess you'll just have to the kata backwards.
He made the entire class do the kata backwards. Twice.

Let's see here...rule #1's that I've heard...
#1 - Don't get hit (we're talking Aikido here) #1(a) - Don't forget to breathe #1(b) - You can't move your hips without moving your feet #1(c) - Your other hand should be doing something
Actually, the last one isn't so much of a rule as it is what he says as he's pointing out WHY that hand should have been doing something else (ouch).

The block is the most important thing
Get your hand in the cave...(you all know that term, ?.. means have other hand always read to use, cocked back...)

Have confidence in yourself; when it comes down to it, if you don't believe you can handle a situation, you won't be able to.
Overconfidence can cause trouble, leading people to put themselves into dangerous situations but lack of confidence is equally dangerous and can cause a person to freeze or panic, instead of dealing with a situation as they have been trained.
This is easier said than done but more training helps.

remain aware of your surroundings at all times. a rule that has and will continue to keep my out of harms way. be aware of your surroundings, the way people are acting (aggressive/overly friendly), and where important objectives are placed, loved ones/anything that can be used as a weapon/position of opponents or possible opponents. i sound a bit paranoid, but i consider being a bit paranoid a good thing.

1.Don't dare to have the bad form to go into a class as a green belt from a different school and sucker an instructor with about 30 yrs. of experience under his frayed little belt into making a rookie mistake and then to add injury to insult by putting your foot upside his noggin. 2.Leave before he has his #1 student spar with you. 3.Being kicked into the wall and then crashing back down onto the ground sucks.

I was wondering if anybody out there could offer a few of their own "Number One Rules"
Here are some I can think of off hand:
-Don't stop to admire your own work. -Get out of the way first. -Bend your knees. -Hit them more than they hit you.
and... -Bring exact change

Hmmm...number one rule of martial arts...well, to my experience and knowledge...
...control what those around you know to the best of your ability. Do not appear trained out of battle, only confident. Do not appear adept inside of battle, so long as you are. A fighter who can make an opponent see gaps and mistakes where they simply do not exist will recieve more openings than one who shows his full ability.

-Get beaten or tapped out on a regular basis (during training!). It keeps you honest.
-If you're not getting beaten or tapped out regularly, find a place where you will.
-Always remember that, no matter how hard you train, all it takes is a coward with a gun to beat you.

Always have had trouble with that one. My next question was always, "Do WHAT?" Mainly because I was never able to pick up all the details and nuances in the very brief, very fast demo.

There are two rules for being successful in martial arts. Rule 1: Never tell others everything you know.

Rule 1: Hit and don't stop hitting. Rule 2: If you get hit, stop getting hit. Rule 3: If you can't control your opponent, you've lost.

Pain is weakness leaving the body. Right Larry? *THUMP*
When it comes to knives, you will get cut. Make sure to cut him worse and end it fast.
If you have to fight, usually better to disappear before the uniforms appear.

If it doesn't, ask your instructor to show you why. Just because you couldn't make it work, doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't work at all. *I know this is an old post Matt, but I was bored.

No problem, bro. I agree with you completely. Testing should be thorough before making a decision about whether something is useful or not. I've run across both ends ends of the spectrum - things I thought would work that didn't, and things that I thought would NOT work that did.
You have to try, to be able to find out!

"If you break your partner you have noone to train with." That's why I started practicing MA with Iaido. Once you have learned the moves, no partner is necessary. Just a room with a high ceiling and a hard wood floor. Come to think of it, those are tough to come by, also.

Number one rule: Turning up for training with the blood of the last class is NOT cool... it's disgusting, as it means you probably still have the sweat from the last class too.

also: You can't always see what the other guy has in his hand/shoe, so treat every attack as a weapon attack.

Blood doesn't wash off very well from white surfaces.. You do know that right? But that aside it is indeed prudent to wash whatever training wear you use.

There are ways... but it's also possible to tell washed blood from unwashed. (but when you're as quick as me, you can get out of the way of their gushing blood)

Don't forget that promptly soaking a bloodied item in COLD water usually dissolves the blood away.

Blood usually washes off with warm water and soap. Don't use cold and don't use hot. You may also want to use a scrub brush lightly. For hard to remove stains use cheap hair spray. This is a trick I got from a neighbor who worked at a hospital for removing blood from white sheets and found very successful. Also found successful in removing other stains. Spray on and let it set and then wash with warm water; light scrubbing to aid as necessary.

There were already some good advises given to remove such stains.
