My friend plays hockey.

Thanks a lot people for all your help, I'll try to answer your questions.

My equipment:

Bench, with 4 available positions, flat, incline, incline, and incline
x2 10 lb barbells
x2 5 lb barbells
x2 25 lb barbells
x2 10 lb dumbells (don't use these anymore, I curl the 25 lb barbells with my hands.)
A bar.

Funny...I had 'veiny' arms and hated it. After working in a restaurant for a year or two, cooking, scooping ice cream, lifting buspans, I looked like the Hulk when I was 20.

But it didn't look so good on a woman.

Advice? Get a job in a restaurant. 6-10 hrs a day of physical labor can do it for you.

Question for the specialists here: is youth a concern/factor? Is there a limit to lifting, and emphasis on lower body fat ratio that should be adhered to at 13?

thanks

Really age shouldn't be a problem, so long as you aren't straining excessively. All weight training will do is increase the density of your bones and connective tissues. It may slow your growth but not stop it or stunt it. I've been lifting on and off since around his age and I have no problems, I'm a healthy 5'10" and 196 lbs of mostly muscle. No issues really and in 8th grade I actually pushed pretty hard on the weights at times so it wont hurt you really I mean I know plenty of older guys (40's-60's) who lifted since they were in grade school and did fine. Actually as it releases testosterone it's probably good for you. It will only screw you up if you train with bad form, too much jerking, too heavy, etc. but that can hurt anyone.
In the old days kids in elementary school would start doing hard physical labor and sometimes weight training equivialant to hard weight training and didn't have too much trouble (yeah back problems maybe but that usually occured from getting overweight years later like my grandpa and his friends, or like I said using horrible form and things like that).

I don't know...seems to me that 13 is rather young to be concerned with lean body mass.

Well, I'd say at that age yo ushouldn't be concerned with looking like a bodybuilder and getting 'cut' however you should be more focused on developing a foundation of fitness and strength that will allow for the big jumps in the late teens/early 20's.
I've known many guys who trained on weights at that age and did fine later i nlife and I've seen credible sources say it's fine so I see no problem however you wont be able to really get 'cut' and built like a hulk at that age unless yo uare a Sammoan or something and hit puberty at 9 lol but otherwise I think it's certainly good to get started at that early on physical exercise and activity for just such a foundation, physically as well as mentally.
You shouldn't think about lifting massive weights or really going serious though just get a start.

Weight training will have zero effect on the rate or amount of skeletal growth.

At 13 with a spine that is still developing, squats, deadlifts and overhead pressing should only be done with light weight and with perfect 100% supervised technique. Laudosis, kyphosis, scoliosis- all deformities of the spine that can be 'trained' into its development with excessively heavy and improper weight lifts.

I missed the 13 years old bit the first time around- at 13 you should not even be thinking about vascularity or any such thing. Get out there and play some sports, keep fit and active, and come back to weight training in 12-18 months, and then make sure that you get someone who knows what they are doing (preferably qualified) to show you some basic lifts that hit all the major muscle groups in balance with one another.

At 13 you are on a road to nowhere when it comes to muscle development- not enough testosterone (just yet), so save the wear and tear on your joints and come back when you have the tools for the job.

Whoa, you lighter and younger than me and you bench only 10kg less than me, good going!

But anyway, whatever your choice, don't overdo it, if you get an injury now from training you'll regret it for quite a few ytears to come.
