If you want to test the limits of technique, try this... find a school, ask to take ukemi from the instructor, then proceed to take the instructor apart... if he/she fails, leave... and find another... if he/she can consistently put you down on your a$$, despite your best efforts, maybe stay a while and see if you can learn anything....

Haha, ya for a guy who has been in a fight maybe twice in his life, and both of those were around grade 6, I could probably get worked by my 7 year old cousin at this point.

There are people out there though that fight to survive, and fight for sport in the real world. Those, and the crazy people that frequent the transit system are the ones I am worried about!

2 since grade 6, huh? And none since? And how old are you now? So really, what are your chances of being in a situation where you would need to use PHYSICAL skills? Besides, the first rule of self-defence is AVOIDANCE.

I'll say this much.... aikido (or any other martial art) will give you some basic skills. How you use those skills are UP TO YOU.

I agree, aikido is not a quick fix for anything, nor will it teach you to "fight." If you want to learn to fight, go out and fight! Aikido will teach you how not to fight and yet not be a victim, but the principles and underlying concepts aren't as easy to grasp as punching and kicking, which in my experience are skills that come more easily than aiki...

Good luck and let us know what you two decide!

Plus ki!

That's a lot of questions...

I had one student that went through the Navy Seals trainning. A wonderful person and friend. He would do 300 pushups before class.

Anyway, he told me that after a few months of Aikido, he actually felt more calm and worried less about actually having to get into a fight.

Don't know if that will help.
