Although it is a choreographed demo, I really like the fluidity of the throws and takedowns. Not something one sees often when watching clips of the UFC.

Enjoy!

I thought it was ok. A good demo with a lot of "show moves". Naturally I don't care for the show side of martial arts. Looks good sure. I'd rather them work.

There is a reason for that. Obviously, part of that is because they don't wear gis in the UFC. Secondly, those throws are that fluid BECAUSE it's a demo. But you knew this already.

These sorts of demos are great to perform at malls when you want to make a recruiting run.

Hi John.

Yes, I realize it was showy, and in choreographed demos, well, one can afford to be showy (heck, that is the reason for a demo, right?). I mean, when doing a karate demo, we do all sorts of flashy crap that I would NEVER recommend in sparring, let alone a real altercation. But, that is what brings in the crowds, right?

Re: this BJJ demo - I posted it because I did really enjoy the beauty of the fluid movements. In my limited formal BJJ training (about 2 yrs worth, about a decade ago), we focused mostly on groundwork, and the takedowns we did learn were of the single/double leg pick variety (don't remember the correct terms). I didn't think of BJJ as being "pretty" in the classical sense, but I did think it was "pretty" darn effective and necessary to study. I was, however, slightly disappointed that we didn't get into any "flashier" hip tosses or anything, but I am not so sure any of that flashy stuff would have stuck with me ten years later like the basics did.

(Mike laments his current lack of grappling partners, and goes back to trolling You-Tube for more BJJ videos he can live vicariously through )

Peace,
Mike

Yes, the "show" side of Brazilian jiu-jitsu can be very pretty. Personally I'm just not into that. But that's me. I find even MORE beauty in the functional side. When you watch skilled guys actually grappling or fighting for real and their technique is at a high level, THAT is poetry in motion.

Well, I thought it was a good demo. I like how they showed the striking and non-ground techniques as well. Most of that stuff gets skipped over in many BJJ schools.

I liked the north/south escape Rickson did, too. I am going to try that in my next class!

The cool thing is that either Rickson or Royler could probably run a clinic just like that on most people without cooperation.

Rickson's NS escape at the 5 minute mark is one of my favorites. I used to surprise a lot of guys with it.
