Hi John.
Yes, I realize it was showy, and in choreographed demos, well, one can afford to be showy (heck, that is the reason for a demo, right?). I mean, when doing a karate demo, we do all sorts of flashy crap that I would NEVER recommend in sparring, let alone a real altercation. But, that is what brings in the crowds, right?

Re: this BJJ demo - I posted it because I did really enjoy the beauty of the fluid movements. In my limited formal BJJ training (about 2 yrs worth, about a decade ago), we focused mostly on groundwork, and the takedowns we did learn were of the single/double leg pick variety (don't remember the correct terms). I didn't think of BJJ as being "pretty" in the classical sense, but I did think it was "pretty" darn effective and necessary to study. I was, however, slightly disappointed that we didn't get into any "flashier" hip tosses or anything, but I am not so sure any of that flashy stuff would have stuck with me ten years later like the basics did.
(Mike laments his current lack of grappling partners, and goes back to trolling You-Tube for more BJJ videos he can live vicariously through

)
Peace,
Mike
