Isshi,

Definitely a good policy. All of our assistant instructors started out by teaching kids. If you can maintain discipline and teach effectively to kids, then you'll have no problems doing the same with adults, but if you start with adults, you may not be able to teach kids. At least thats what I've observed.

Bump to discuss the results of the poll.

As the results stand so far,

The majority of people were over 21, with more than 5 years of training, however I was surprised by the large number of teenagers and people with less than 5 years of training that have taught as well.
Knowing what you know now, do you think you had enough experience in your art to start teaching when you did?

1. I think this poll should be moved to the Teaching section of the forum.

2. I'm not surprised by the results...considering the pressures on the traditional arts to survive...and the commercial aspects of the rest.

I voted no for myself. Although there were no black belts at the school at that time (besides the owner), so it didn't seem as awkward. As a blue belt, I was the 3rd highest rank there!

It's my Junior year, and this fall, I was the most experienced one left on the Fencing Team that hadn't graduated who could make it every day. It was hard, believe me. I learned the hard way, but I think I did well due to the help of one senior who graduated this semester. Next semester will be harder. Hopefully I'm ready for it.
