Basically your still chosen ( make yourself unattractive to an attacker, hard targeting (C/o Geoff Thonpson)), your still set up and approached ( even though it would be sudden and from out of nowhere) they then move directly to the physical attack and so on. Also ambush attacks are usually motivated by revenge, payback or to commit a crime, mugging sexual assault rape etc. They are comparatively rare, to other assaults. But I'm not saying don't train for them, they do happen

Certainly. I understand the point of being a hard target. I also believe much of that comes about due to proper training (again, aliveness). There is something about good training over a period of time (which includes going all out at times – to the point of knock-out, etc) that develops a sort-of “seasoning” within the fighter, particularly if he is reasonably intelligent and understands the realities of the “street” (weapons, multiple assailants, etc). This seasoning goes a LONG way toward the “hardening” of the target, so to speak.

I've never said "just never be there" obviously prevention is better then cure but Self Protection is about responsible freedom. don't take unnecessary risks, pre-plan, a safe way to get home, carry an extra $20 in your shoe for emergency taxi etc basically be proactive with your safety, carry a spare tyre if your traveling so to speak.

I agree completely. That’s just keeping your brains about you. Common sense will do much to keep a person safe. Though it doesn’t appear to be all that “common” with many people, lol.

Oh as far as me running track, I wouldn't won't to expose the public to that kind of thing

That’s MY first line of defense.

If but you have to admit the gym. dojo, dojang, kwoon etc IS different from the streetThere is consent, rules, preparation etc The difference between the dojo and the street is the unknown. ( please don't take it that I am saying you are unaware of this..

Sure there is a difference between the gym and the street. I believe a big part of it is a mental thing. Two words: Alex Gong. He might still be alive today if he had the mental part down (he certainly had the physical skill).

However, I realize that there are good wrestlers out there and that anything can happen. Life has a way of making liars out of us. Knowing the way luck runs, I’ll be caught in the very situation that I say never can happen. So I plan of as many of them as possible. Obviously you can’t plan for everything and you can train for every scenario. There are just too many. That’s why I train the way I do (MMA based with occasional weapons work).

Not mine either, I didn't mean it to come across that way. What you call the "legitimate game" sounds much like what I mean by "Delivery System". and where you say "delivery system" I may say "Range" (semantics)

Exactly! That’s it completely. The legit game is simply the development of delivery systems (standing, clinch, ground) – or, the three “ranges”. Certainly so. Situations may change, but the delivery systems remain constant.

Excactly, I agree 100% with you, they complement each other. The delivery system contributes to the foul tactics, and the foul tactics contribute to the delivery system.

I agree. I have theories about their (foul tactics) use which may not always be in-line with other folks, but I do believe they have a place.

I've said this to Brian once and I'll now say it to you, I would happily learn from you.

I take that as a compliment. Ideally we would share experiences and information. We’re all equal. Thank you!

Being a hard target isn't necessarily being "hard" in the Street or fighting sense, though lets face it, it helps, especially in the ego type pup fights. but it's also things that stop you being chosen in the first place by muggers and rapists etc. things like being aware of what's happening around you, predators pick up on that, walking with a purpose, not displaying snatch-able valuables, Like cameras. not burying your head into a mobile phone strolling along while texting and listening to your MP3 player ( I hate that, i saw a young lady the other day walk straight into the street because she was paying more attention to the mobile then where she was going)

But I agree good solid training is priceless, I usually look at things from self protection of female, elderly, children or otherwise non combative type, hence the strong emphasis on the pre contact, awareness and preventative stuff. Hell I've had two articles published in Australia's Blitz Martial Arts Mag, both relating to Awareness. I'm hoping to have a third published in 2007 which covers the stages of an attack. ( another chance to bring them up )

My approach is to provide Self protection skills as quickly as possible and then develop the student according to their needs. Of course they still get to hit things a lot, usually me, there has to be some fun lectures can get a little boring

Any way Was off to bed when I noticed your post so thought I give a quick response and now I'm waffling.

I love it when ways meet

speaking personally, if I'm in a situation where I have to perform an eye gouge, I really don't care what the long term effects will be. If you don't want possible long term effects as a result of my eye gouge, don't attack me.

Heck, I figure if somehow I did cause long term effects from an eye gouge on the jerk that attacked me, maybe he'll think twice before attacking someone else.
