Jeff Monson lost to decision, not a very entertaining fight to me. And GSP defeated Matt Hughes in the second round by TKO, knocked him down with a shin to the head and followed up with the ground and pound, it was an awesome fight.

I thought Monson would have dominated on the ground, but If Tim managed to dictate the fight to his strengths all credit to him.

I am truly suprised by the GSP win- its not that I didn't think he had the skill to do it, its just Hughes has been 'in the zone' for so long that feels weird to think of him being beaten.

How did Mir do?

Go GSP, all credit to Matt Hughes, but I find GSP much more exciting to watch.

Mir got dominated. I think it was the guys debut to who beat him, because someone else called in and couldn't make it so they picked some guy from a camp... he could fight thats for sure.

Man I knew GSP would win. GSP made Matt Hughes look amateur he was so overpowering.. thats the best I've ever seen GSP fight. The two unintentional groin shots sucked though, but you could tell GSP didn't mean to.

That spinning back kick to hughes.. sent him 8 feet into the cage. Even hughes was impressed and clapped hands before continuing the fight.

Dag! Good thing I wasn't betting money.

I knew GSP and Tim could handle themselves well, but I didn't really expect that either one would be able to carry it all the way.

Oh well. I look forward to seeing some of the matches on replay.

Jef Monson actaully did get Tim to the ground a couple times but his arms were to short for ground and pound, and Tim narrowly slipped out of a gioutine, all that was in round 3, other than that it was a pretty boring fight. And Brandon Vera mad quick work of Frank Mir in the first round by TKO.

I watched it, I loved it and with the exception of one fight, I picked all of the winners. GSP my Canadian brother all of the way and I "knew" without a shadow of a doubt he would win. Now having met and trained with him at one of his seminars, plus having my picture taken with him, it feels that much better. Plus the technique where he caught Matt's leg and then immediately took him to the ground, this was one of the techniques taught at this seminar ... awesome.

That was Vera's 4th fight in the UFC. You're thinking of Drew McFeddries who fought Alessio Sakara.

100% wrong. Matt Hughes is both skilled and fast and GSP is strong. Why do people still believe this crap that Hughes is just strong and has no skill?

he does have skill but as far as standup he lacks it, did you see his sloppy attempt at jabs? he needs more confidence and proper muay thai training he was completly outclassed.

his legs looked really beaten at the start of the second round thumbs up for GSP

Just rephase this please. Matt Hughes is skilled only on one aspect of his training. Man, he has no foot work no head movement etc. If his take downs dont work, what do he have to fall back on surely not his boxing skills or lack there of....

I love this sort of stuff. Look, Matt Hughes losing does not magically erase the high level of skill he has. It just meant he met a better fighter on the day. You know what? GSP will eventualy lose, and when that happens, he will still be an immensely skilled and talented fighter, it just means he was bested on the day.
Accusing Hughes of being weak and one dimensional is silly in light of his record and the quality of oponents he has successfully defended his title against (including GSP and BJP). All that it proves is that at the very pinnacle of competition, everyone has a great chance of winning. BJP and GSP are both 1-1 with Matt. GSP's next fight will either be a rematch with MH or a defence against BJ. Either way he will have every chance of winning, and also every chance of losing.

there is a lot of crowing to be done by the 'we hate Matt' club, but personal opinion on percieved character does not nullify proven skill.

It would be like saying Phil Baroni cant punch hard because I dont like his attitude. Like him or not, he could punch my teeth out in a second.

Hughes's reign as champion, and his place in the UFC hall of fame come retirement will outlast internet criticism, and deservedly so IMO.

Matt hughes is still very good in stand up just not world class. Wrestling, ground and pound and submission is what he does best but he is still a decent striker. Better than most of us probably. Or me anyway.

Alessio Sakara lost. It was a good banger fight with them both throwing everything they had including the kitchen sink. Very weird ending with what looks like a delayed reaction to a previous hit where Sakara just stops and drops to his butt in a defensive position to only take repeated punches from Drew McFedries who capitalized on the situation. Of the 9 fights on the card, this is the only one I picked wrong on.

I'm surprised. Alesio Sakara is supposed to be an almost unstoppable striker with fantastic boxing skills. Has he won at all?

He's 14-4-0

Everybody can lose and this was his time. Drew McFedries was a last minute replacement and won so good for him.

Thanks Cord. I think a psot of that nature has to be stickied.

I also said the original post was wrong because people say stuff like that because they're weak, so they like to attribute stuff they lack to the loser and stuff they think they have to the winner.

While I'm no fan of Matt Hughes, I do enjoy many of his fights and for a person who's accomplished quite a bit. I look forward to GSP and Matt meeting up again. I have to say though, Matt almost looked defeated before he entered the cage ... and as well the same demeanor when he fought BJ Penn. Maybe something is going on mentally with him and why his performance was not up to par with other of his matches. Maybe this is why there are rumors running amock about his early retirement. Perhaps he said something to somebody and it wasn't suppose to be said and now he is back tracing or perhaps doing crowd control? We won't know for sure but I hope he sticks around to fight GSP again.

I am a big Matt fan I will agree that his last few fights he did not look the best.

It could be due to the fact that the people who face him know they have to be better so they train harder. Every sport has had a “great one” that ruled the sport until the rest of the pack caught up with them. Also having the belt is a big boost to your confidence and you might let your training slack off. I hope this was not the case.

I still think that Matt is one of the best fighters to get in the ring. And I hope with this loss he goes back and trains harder then ever and learns something from the loss.

GSP I was not a big fan of I had seen little from him and I felt he was over hyped. I was wrong he is all game and came to play to win.

Can someone please explain to me how Serra has landed another high profile fight after consistently under-achieving and failing to learn to even try and defend a choke properly? And i bet he will still come in with all the smack talk, despite refusing to ever back it up in his actions.

I enjoyed Matt Serra on the Ultimate Fighter Come Back show. However Serra does not have near the ability that GSP has and will be an easy win for GSP, or that is how I see it.

Serra's weakness is the standup, and GSP is going to pound him. If Serra couldnt take down Chris Lytle in the TUF finals there is no way he could take down GSP. I was pulling for Chris Lytle to win TUF but honestly I dont think he would fare any better. He isn't aggressive enough to beat GSP. It was Lytle being conservative that lost him the TUF finals, and GSP would pounce on that.

Just saw the Hughes/GSP fight. I thought it was a good match, with a lot of good action. Matt was much less aggressive than I have seen him before, and let GSP control the fight. Props to GSP for his excellent takedown defense, and good striking timing.

Matt Serra will get creamed by GSP,no doubt. I couldn't stand that guy on the show and I laughed when Shoney Carter landed the spinning forearm on him again.

"DRAGO!! DRAGO!!! GET OFF THE FENCE DRAGO!!! DRAGO!!!"

That got on my nerves.

Right, that was it. Knew it was something off the wall. Thankfully it wasn't Celine Dion or something like that. I can just see the fog rising and the song from the Titanic starting to play.

It was "Imagine" by John Lennon. Not exactly music to get you amped up.

That depends. Maybe, like me, he holds Yoko Ono personaly responsible for the break up of the beatles, and finds her continuing 'professional widow' act obscene.
'Imagine' may well embody for Monson, the post Beatles 'John and yoko protesting in a bed' era of his career. Seething with rage at this waste of talent, Sylvia blurred into a very tall, but very real yoko ono in Monsons hate filled eyes. From then on all that was left was to ground and pound the evil b1tch into submission.

Sadly, like in real life, Yoko got her own way.

Of course, I could be wrong

So did Sylvia.

My friend and I were watching and we were like "this guy has an anarchy tattoo and what looks like a guy doing the hitler hile one the back of his neck and he walks out to imagine" what's with that? most of the music was weird except Matt Hughes I expected "Contry boy can survive" by Hank Williams Jr. Cause that suited him perfect for his BJ Penn fight.

Jeff's appearnace fools alot of people. having met him on several occasions at ATT in Coconut Creek Fl(very near my home), I can tell you that he is a very mild mannered soft spoken man. He is also quite the activist. His views and politics are very left wing.

He is very outspoken, and demonstrates against, the war in Iraq. He also has a very socialist view on political and social issues.

He is a pacifist in the way that Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali) was. "No I don't beleive in war, But I'll pound the living hell out of you in a ring".

Nice guy. Good fighter.

Question: instead of just training his boxing really hard, would some muy thai complete with LEG KICKS have changed the scope of that fight??

Leg kicks can work very well. Remember Marco Ruas vs Paul Vaarlens (sp)? My friends and I watched that, laughing to each other how the big guy (Vaarlens) was going to stomp the "little" guy (Ruas).

Ruas proceeded to leg kick Vaarlens until Vaarlens couldn't move anymore. Textbook use of leg kicks.

Hey Page, being a TKD'st I certainly advocate more leg kicking but in Monson's case, in order for him to leg kick Sylvia he would need to get in close and that would be right into Sylvia's punching range. I think if Sylvia worked more on leg kicks he would have done even more damage to Monson though I can understand his apprehension of not wanting to kick in fear that Monson would latch on like a Mongoose and take him down, though after watching this I was fairly impressed with Sylvia's defense on the ground. Sylvia's height was his total advantage from stand up to takedown as the length of his body even on this back made for Monson to have a hard time reaching his face, though he was able on a few occasions, not to mention a few overhand rights in the stand up.

I think every aspect needs to be worked on and a lot more would benefit from more leg kicks, as GSP proved with Matt Hughes. Don't for once think that those leg kicks don't take take something out of you little by little. And when you constantly have to also think about the legs on top of the stiff jab in your face, you make the error of going in for a leg and taking it to the side of the head and the next thing you know you are on your back and handing over the title.

Monson ... don't think he was ready but he did a good job in my book for lasting 5 rounds and I enjoy him as a fighter. Anybody who fights Sylvia has to know it will be less then entertaining to go up against him.

Just saw GSP-Hughes. Amazing!!! The stand-up stuff was awesome, and although I don't consider MH a great stand-up fighter, he was made to look much worse than he really is. GSP is just so explosive! The takedown defense in the first round was great, and really took the momentum firmly away from Hughes. I feel a bit sorry for Hughes actually- after GSP escaped the takedown he must have been thinking "jeez, this guy knows all the tricks." It was also a very clever fight strategy from GSP, by using plenty of leg kicks he set the high kick up beautifully, leading to a great KO.

One question I have though: GSP is BIG for his weight, and as he gets older it'll get harder and harder to keep within 170. So where will he go- will he tone down the muscle, do some crazy water weight loss, or step up a weight division?

I don't see GSP big for his weight. When I went to his seminar in the early summer he wasn't cut like this so you know he worked hard for this fight. He only stands about an inch taller then me at 5'9.5", but I out weight him 35 lbs from his fighting weight and I am not fat in the least. I think he can easily keep the weight and cut what little he has to so as to stay in the Welter Weight Division.
