I ticked 'instructor and other' because I learn from my instructor, books (although strictly only books on the subject of the precise art I'm studying, mostly to help me memorise forms and terminology and stuff like that) and articles on the Internet - my taekwon-do training has been greatly helped by some of the stuff people have posted on here, for example.

Through failure.

But since that's not a category, I'll go with instructors.

I've observed something very curious in my short time studying martial arts: what I'm learning and what my sensei is teaching...are two different things.

Learning from an instructor is more rewarding, provides a richness of context and dynamism that no video can supplant. It provides opportunities for learning and change that are qualitatively different.

So true, Harlan. But after reaching a certain level (and because my sensei retired 250 miles away), I differ from his viewpoints in some minor ways, and am always looking for something else to assimilate.

I have had various instructors and coaches throughout the years. Now I primarily learn through my students and partners, going to coaches as often as possible for fine tuning adjustments.

It's been a year since I saw my last coach. I've waited much longer than I wanted to but that's life for you. Hopefully I can meet with him again in the coming months.

There's no "Everything" option. I learn from instructors, training partners, friends, watching fights, instructional videos, instructional books, mental state books, drawing comparisons and figuring out basic principles with other things like poker, chess and such, thinking about fighting, dreaming, analyzing my dreams. I'll look at anything as an opportunity to learn.
