I chose Ninjutsu, as the 9 ryu taught within what is thought of as 'ninjutsu' are not all focussed on unarmed violence. There is training in the use and preparation of medicine's, explosives, and a number of weapons, including archery, also there is training on the preparation of 'raw food'
Irrespective of its reputation and credibility issues, the actual skillset involved in authentic ninjutsu technicaly has more survival tools in its teachings than any other traditional MA, ergo has the best potential to be of use.

It is more instructive to see what art(s) carries the lowest percentage. I don't think it is a given that people will chose the art currently under study for the simple reason that many arts are really not suitable in the given scenario.

So far no one chose Aikido, BJJ, perhaps reflecting the perception that grappling, joint-locking, ground-fighting arts are really not effective in this kind of dog-eat-dog environment where 'survival-fighting' means anything goes.

Surely an edged weapons-centered art with a heavy emphasis on stick-cum-dagger fighting like Escrima/Kali would be good.

It is also anticipated that fighting will not be one-on-one most of the time and so mass-drilling of basic but effective weapons combat skills will be necessary and so weapons like the chinese kung fu spear will be usefull as it is easy to manufacture and learned. There will be some members of the extended family who may have no MA training at all and the spear with its long reach will allay the psychological fear of untrained people for close-in fighting.

I chose Escrima.

I already know how to skin a cat, BTW.

Technically, Cord, you're picking Bujinkan. Ninjutsu comprises only 3 of the 9 ryu taught within the Bujinkan system.

ah yes, but those 3 ryu are not taught as individual arts anymore, they have been absorbed into the grouping that is taught in Bujinkan, Genbukan and related offshoot styles, therefore, to learn 'ninjutsu' in the modern day, you would have to have exposure to the other ryu as well. I believe this means my 'ownership' may be premature

Where's the Tai Chi selection? I want to choose the extreme ultimate fist as my doomsday style.

I'm an amateur survivalist. I've read the doomsday FAQ and the Nuclear FAQ. I know how to create gunpowder, leather and soap from base materials, various weapons (bows, flint knives, etc). I'm a half-decent archer. I've done enough hiking and camping to handle myself in the wild (creating shelters, starting a fire without matches, etc). I have not actually done everything I'd want (I've not gone fishing or skinned game before), but I know that I could cope with it if put in a situation where it were necessary.

I can construct various styles of shelters from a simple rain-proof screen to a full hut out of materials found in most environments. I know the usual survivalist methods of finding water in the desert and keeping warm in the cold that you can find in any book, although I've never had to apply it.

I'm pretty good with pottery in a pinch, I could make a mudbrick kiln pretty easily. I'm ok with woodwork and I know how to make electrical generators with base materials too (as long as I've got enough magnets and wire). I'm pretty sure that with two small metal plates, some wire, a few 2p and 10p coins, some salt water and a small pipe, I could create a capacitor which could spark enough to light a fire. Given the right equipment and materials, I could probably construct a transistor radio (thank you highschool physics/electronics).

I know about emergency signalling and how to set up traps for small game. I know basic first aid and resuscitation. I know how to treat most simple ailments from burns to frostbite. I can handle extended periods of solitude calmly. I'm pretty good with sewing, better at least than your average 21 year old male.

I am a fairly decent rock climber. I enjoy white water rafting and have studied surf rescue (I'm a very strong swimmer, especially in heavy surf, I topped my class). I'm also a damn fine cook if I do say so myself, especially when it comes to BBQ and open fires. I'd probably out-last most people by maybe two to three days if I just went out into the wilderness (what's left of it).

If you're interested in this sort of thing I'd recommend getting yourself a copy of the "SAS Survival Guide" and "How to survive anything, anywhere".

Join a surf rescue course, take up hiking, archery, sport shooting, skiing, first aid, join the scouts (I was one), do some rock climbing and absailing, take up weaving, tanning and sewing, pottery, woodwork, electronics, chemistry, metal work, cooking, etc. Anything which relates directly to working with things which aren't produced through a system of specialists but which can be done by an individual on their own.

I've managed to learn most of the above without it wrecking my life or becoming an obsession and all this in addition to my studies and MA. If I can pull that off, anyone can.

Well, that's my primer for Survivalism 101, basically all the information there to get anyone started in survival studies. There are tonnes of things you can learn about this sort of thing if you just go out and look for it. Yes, other paranoid survivalists like me exist out there too. Post-apocalyptica is a fascinating subject.

P.S. Don't get caught up in the paranoia.

Leo, you just listed my Fall holidays that I used to take.

My brother and law and I would gear up and go hunting and camping for a week in the bushes. We brought only what we needed and never went overboard. We'd go to an area far in the bushes and cut a path through the trees so that we could get the truck in. We'd set up a camp and hide it all in with trees and stuff. We'd set up 2 tents, one to sleep in and one for our supplies. We'd put up tarps to keep water off and build leantoos to break the wind. We'd camp and hunt and a lot of times just lay back in the bushes and fall asleep for hours. We'd split up and have walkie talkies to keep in touch.

I can hunt, gut and skin an animal. I can fish even without a rod making my own lure and finding my own bait. I'm also a great cook in the wilderness and know to cook something you only need a small fire which we would do all of the time by digging in the dirt down just enough to put some sticks in and have a little hot fire. I can start a fire with a flint but also have a survival kit with waterproof matches in a water tight container. This also has safety blankets, fishing string, needles (for sowing or repairing; injuries, tent, etc.), first aid material, compass, knife, hooks, candle, mirror, salt, spices, asperin, water purifying tablets, etc.

I've had to mend a tent when the zipper broke in the rain. I've washed days with cold water. I've boiled water and used purifying tablets. While hunting we've found several old trapper cabins. I've shot and ate grouse, fished and caught fish and ate in the bushes and loved every moment of it. It it too bad my brother-in-law and I had a falling out as we did this for so many years and was a great time. We'd go up North in Canada (Whitecourt/Fox Creek area) in September and it can get pretty cold some nights but enjoyed having a small fire while drinking hot chocolate mixed with Bailey's Irish Cream or Butter Riple Shnaps while looking at the stars and listening to the wilderness. Nobody around just us and nature. Good memories.

The survivalists will inherit the Earth. Uhh, if you're within maybe 1-2 kilometres, you could probably catch me on AM radio. No way I'd be able to construct FM or UHF though, that's way beyond me.

In event of world-ending-catastrophe, refer to your nearest survialist for guidance.

P.S. Dereck, did you know that you can make a rudimentary water filter with a billy can, a few hankerchiefs/thin scarves, some gravel, pebbles, sand and iodine? After filtering through this, the water that you boil should be much clearer and easier to drink. I've never given it a try but I've always wanted to.

Also, I've always had trouble starting a fire with only sticks and tinder. Every time I try to make a bow for starting the fire it just goes out before the tinder lights. Any tips maybe?

P.P.S. Here's a really good recipie for biodiesel:

http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make.html#biod

More here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiesel_production

I hear that most old engines can actually run on this stuff and that it makes a good substitute for regular diesel. I know for sure that an old VW Beetle can run on this (heck, what can't they run on?)

And here's a nice article on the basic principles of making a hydrogen fuel cell:

http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/fuel_cell/fuel_cell.html

So much information online! It's great!
