The Apocalypse, Armageddon, the end of it all…

Hypothetical question:
Tomorrow the world as we know it ends. The end could be from a nuclear war, an incurable disease, a massive meteor hitting the earth etc.
End result is the governments of the world collapse, and all society breaks down. Chaos and violence rule the streets. There is no police or organized military presence. It’s every man for himself and his family. You are one of the survivors who must try to stay alive in this hostile new world.
Given the above situation:
Which martial art and/or weapon system (non-firearm) do you think would best keep you alive and able to defend your family?

Can we just go back to asking which art do you think is best?
We are going to get the question anyway. At least by allowing it staight forward, we can avoid the outlandish scenarios!

Kenjutsu and Iajutsu, all those samurai couldn't have been that far off. It was the way for years and the most feared for years. Everyone looked for a way to counter the sword which was the greatest weapon of that era. That and archery or Kyudo. Got to be able to kill from a distance. That work for you Doc? Scottie

my money is on Reiki being the last one standing. she'd be too hard to cannibalize with her 'iron shirt' training. but the best martial art post-armegeddon would be the Art of the US Army Rangers...those guys are trained to survive anywhere.

What about the Israeli army combat training? I've heard that's nasty stuff.

Bboy-ryu. The art of breakdancing. After all, who would want to kill a guy that can spin on his head/elbows/knees/shoulders....?

A 14th century rapier in one hand, and a bowie knife in the other. I would use spanish and italian fencing methods form the 14th-16th centuries, a paintball gun filled with pepperballs, muay thai, BJJ, and wwII style combatives. Oh and my mom, she'd kill everyone, or jsut have all the guys going gaga over her. I should send her to iraq.

In all seriousness, my martial art is the best. P.S. This is what everyone's response is going to be if we take this seriously, so why bother? In such a rediculous theoretical situation, no one in the world would have any better chance than anyone else. There's no way that a single person could survive without the assistance of other people. This is why armies are made up of scalable divisions, rather than individuals fighting on their own. Even guerilla tactics use teams of combatants. We've evolved "herding mentality" for self protection as much as anything else.
