I was just browsing my copy of Karatedo Nyumon by Gichin Funakoshi (sadly I dont have it to hand).

In the section where he talks about secretive Karate practice on Okinawa (page 20something) he talks about sending his son Gigo to visit a master in Okinawa in order to learn a secret kata that had never been taught correctly to anyone else.
Does anyone have any idea what this form might be and if it was included in the Shotokan syllabus?
I would presume that this form would be either unique to Shotokan or at least uniquely different (so nothing new there).

Shonuff

Unlikely, Shotokan shares its kata (mostly) with the rest of Onkinawan karate--esp the Shorin styles.

Highly unlikely that a kata was passed down to Gigo that was not also passed down to others.

Not that it could not happen--just not very likley.

As to which kata it was--no clue--sorry.

I have read that same book. I was under the impression from other sources as well that the kata that he picked up was Sochin. I could be wrong though as there are some conflicting details. Ill have to check but I think that I read taht in Shegeru Egami's Book "Heart of Karate_D0" Id be curious to see if anyone else has some more concrete info

Thx for the responses guys!

Sochin is not a kata I've ever payed much attention too, does anyone know what other styles practice it and if there are any major differences to the Shotokan version.

Any history, information, opinions or application ideas would also be welcome additions to the thread???

Funakoshi states in one of his books that Ason thaught shorei-ryu in Nahe and that Iwah thaught shorin-ryu in Shuri. I have read a theory once by a German karate-historicus that Ason imported the -chin kata's to Okinawa.
Sochin seiyunchin shishochin sanchin naifanchin were imported through Ason according to him. But up till now I have not encountered other sources that support this theory. I forgot the name of the German.
