The more I study Martial Arts, the more I find that Modern and Traditional do not exist. It just depends on the people involved and what they do, regardless of time.
Lately I've been thinking that distinguishing between Sedentary Martial Arts and Non-Sedentary Martial Arts would be better.
Does that mean working out the difference between self defence while seated or kneeling and self defence while standing up? or like this charming icon?

That is a good way to describe it, too. Except it might be more accurate to say Sedentary Martial Arts schools and Non-Sedentary Martial Arts schools.

Hi migo!
In all seriousness (and no disrespect meant), what do you mean by this?
Thanks! Mike

Sedentary means it wouldn't change as the change in situations would require it to change. This would usually turn up in TMA schools which keep things the same for the sake of tradition, not because the tradition remains valid in the current context.

It sounds like you are talking about 'static' vs. 'dynamic'. Is this correct? I actually think that distinction makes a lot of sense. It makes much more sense to me (when it comes to arguing combat effectiveness) than the 'style vs. style' arguments that are so rife around here. Using your distinction, it is possible that between two different schools of TMA teaching similar styles, one could be static and the other dynamic.
For example, my original school was pretty static. They did things because that was the 'way they are done', and (at least in my experience) did not change things based on evidence to the contrary (i.e., someone demonstrating that certain techniques or ways of training were not combat-effective).
My current club is much different - it seems much more 'dynamic' to me. In my 17 yrs of training and teaching here, I have seen marked evolution of thought, technique, and teaching styles in an ever-continuing quest to make what we do more efficient and effective. Of course, the club does not claim to have the corner on the combat-effectiveness market. As a korean TMA we know that our "official" curriculum is lacking certain elements (like grappling), but we welcome and encourage cross-training, and are always willing to host other stylists for a few sessions and learn what they have to teach.
'Sedentary vs. Non-Sedentary' - nice, migo!

Peace, Mike

I'm glad you like it, took me a while (several years of arguing over the issue actually) to realise that my definition of "Traditional" was different from a lot of other people's. I think that caused some unnecessary flame wars on various forums. Sedentary isn't an oft used term, so people don't have an automatic defensive reaction when it comes up either. I think I've already seen people complain about the static and dynamic distinction, although I think that works just as well.
