A "racoon" is omnivorous, mostly noctural furry animal found all over the USA/Canada.
Ranges in size from 15 lbs to upwards of 30 lbs.
Its pretty smart for a near rodent and has passable "thumbs" so it can do some really weird things in terms of getting into and out of places/items.
Climbs and swims well too....they can actually drown the dogs used to hunt it every now and then.
Hunting it was and still is a common pastime in some areas of the USA.
Mountain Men or Davy Crocket etc are often pictured wearing a racoonskin cap.
There was a trade in their furs...still is to a much lesser extent.
Properly cooked they taste pretty good as well.
The name is often shortend to "coon" in several dialects of US "English."
It also has an unfortunate "slang" meaning that is quite racist and rather dated......ie its a kinda old and out of date racial slur that few people use anymore...and of course should never use.
So when people in the USA talk about "coon huntin"....unless you know otherwise
and there are some of those a-holes out there of course
they are usually talking about the animal.
OMG am I pedantic or what??????
I don't think I really want an answer to that.
