Heres a fairly goo description of what a maki wara/i is: http://ctr.usf.edu/shotokan/makiwara.htmlThough that is'nt the only type of makiwara, it is suprizing how many variations there are, but the one shown in the link may be termed as your 'standard' maki-wara. If you do decide to take this up then listen here: SEEKING INSTRUCTION ON THE USE OF A MAKI WARA IS A MUST Please seek instruction in it's use, if you dont and try to use it without knowing how to then you'll probably end up hurting yourself for life. Happy training

Finger pushups are a bit too much, this gave me some ideas though. By the way, whats a makiwari? HI there. finger push ups? Its progressive.Start with flat hands, press ups on the knuckles on a soft surface etc etc. Maki Wari. Not for the feint hearted. As som eone stated on here and suggested if a person wishes to do maki wari training then perhaps do it under instruction. Again it has to be progressive.

I use old boards that I have broken for tests to do multiple chops and strikes on with them resting on the ground. I punch them with a rhythm and about 1/4 power and then I change to a chop, then to a one knuckle. Hands are pretty resilient now, especially my right hand.

Sissy eh? Does a training device need iron spikes and flesh tearing materials in order to be effective? Keep researching the Makiwara, and read some old threads before you make more hasty assumptions.

Sissy eh? Does a training device need iron spikes and flesh tearing materials in order to be effective? Keep researching the Makiwara, and read some old threads before you make more hasty assumptions. Said Mr Alejandro Hi there Mr Crablord Well. have you used the Maki Wari? Would you like to use the Maki Wari? I think I shall leave the answer to your comment to Mr Alejandro. I am a bit busy training my hands on the maki wari, heavy bag, speed ball and later on my training partner’s during sparring.(With their consent of course) The knowledge on maki waris is available if you care to look but I don’t recall any body who has trained on a maki wari ever calling it sissy. Whats so bad about it? I Suppose there is a first time.

I swear I posted a reply to what a makiwara/i is but it seems to not have appeared...oh well. Crablord made me laugh like hell, reminds me of this big lug I saw in a movie once. "That's it? all I gotta do is beat this guy? pfft...be back in a sec.......*crash, bang, wollop*...Uh...What happened? who ran me over?"
