And why would they only have the most basic instincts if they are frshly killed and turned? Why wouldn't other brain parts function just as effectively?
The transition from dead to undead is not instant, There is a period of 4-10 minutes between death and reanimation. It is thought that this period of the brain being without oxygen is long enough to cause the brain damage and resultant loss of higher function that displays itself in even the freshest of re-animates.
As to the head shot- you have to remeber than the entry wound may look like a neat hole, but the average damage a bullet does when in the skull cavity is enourmous. To be safe, military operatives are advised that 'Dum-Dum's' are to be used for maximum tissue and exit trauma.

ROFL great thread , just found it! Matt and Cord your descriptions have made me feel more than a little quesy.... thanks for that i agree with Chen Zen, 32" katana, also if i could get one, a DAO12 would be nice. But guys, surely the ultimate would be a light sabre!!?? think i would need some armour, chain mail and kevlar sort of stuff. Isnt it strange how many of us have really thought this through, great!!! the zombie baby in remade Dawn of the dead was truly horrifying, especially as my wife had quite literaly just given birth... But it is only the nerves and crebral cortex that animate the dead- much like applying an external electric current can cause a dead limb to move. For digestion, nutrient absorbtion, thermogenesis etc to be functioning, their would have to be cardiovascular and lung function- technicaly defining the zombie as alive. This works fine if they are in fact living humans suffering from a virus (28 days later), but a 'proper' undead zombie, has no such active physiology. Indeed, according to 'Romero's Law' first established in the late 60's, a zombies main enemy is time. Whilst decomp of the organs begins quickly, the muscle tissue and nervous system survives in tact for longer, allowing basic motor function to occur. inevitably though, when the muscle tissue fails, no matter what basic brain function remains, no limbs will be able to react to the messages sent to it. once decomp renders them unable to move, the threat is over. on this basis, a dead body, exposed to the air and elements should have a mobility span of no more than 4-6 months. It is doubtful during that period that any increase in brain function would occur, and so the ability to learn (a theory recently considered by my esteemed colleague Dr. Romero), would seem unlikely.
Interesting. So we can assume that cell division has stopped. This would prevent the zombie from "healing" to any great extent. The zombie virus must keep the cells in a semi-suspended state of activity, where they can act as normal cells do, with a much longer (single phase) life span than a normal cell - but still with eventual necrosis.
I am unclear on the muscle cells mytochondrial/ATP functions. Something must still be causing the zombie muscle to react to the electrical stimulus. Whither BuDoc or srv?

With real, Haitian style zombies salt 'kills' them.
Now, having heard thugs in South African townships were adept at killing people with bicycle spokes (and have you ever seen a zombie in Soweto... I rest my case)I think a couple of bicycle wheels with sharpened spokes would be useful... or maybe a wind-destroyed umbrella...

I believe this theory May be correct Dr. Jannson. Consider other undead sources, such as the Vampire. In the historical documentation of Blade versus Dracula, Blade won by attacking the red cells of Dracula. It was the cells that kept him and all other vampires alive. With this knowledge one would assume that the typical Zombie shared some of the same characteristics of the vampire at least on a cellular levl. I further imply that perhaps the occurence of Zombies could even be attributed to half turned vampire victims.

only japan could make such a pathetically stupid douchebag of a movie. Ill in fact make my own movie plot which can rival that in less than a minute.
One day in Tokyo a young nubile teenage girl suddenly mutates into a fish monster for absolutely no damn reason in hell. After this more fish monsters start appearing to somehow overwhelm the Japanese military and force everyone to live in fear. They call these monsters "simon" The only solution? Some sort of brad pit lookalike armed with only a chainsaw and good looks. He sorts all this out by telling the main fish monster hes sorry shortly before slicing her sorry ass in half. Japanese population is freed from the tyranny of young nubile girl power things. And lives happily ever after.
thankyou thankyou I'm here all week
