If I had enough food to go on for a while, I'd lock myself up in a jewelry store. These buildings are usually reinforced to prevent theft, so the zombies could never break in. If I don't have food, a supermarket could be a good idea, but I'd go with a Walmart since they have all sorts of useful supplies in addition to the food. And they have videogames to kill the time while we wait for something to happen.

I'd do basically what cord said (that's always been my idea of what to do in a city situation with zombie infestation), grocer stores or supermarkets are your best option, however, first I'd go to the nearest sporting goods stor (NOT a gun shop becuase yo need more than just guns) and load of a good sized pickupo truck with a hell of a lot of guns, ammo, tools, supplies and whatnot, to further fortify the grocer store/supermarket, and I'd take whatever else may be useful, and THEN I'd head to the store, secure it, lock it down, and so on. One thing I'd try to do is armor and fortify the truck (and I'd make sure its 4x4) and keep it gased up so if neccessary I could drive out of town and plow threw any zombies and escape (if for example the military decided they wanted to blow the crap out of the city) like in Dawn of the Dead however I'd be sure I knew how to use a chainsaw properly or just not have one in the truck UNLIKE in Dawn of the Dead.

Only one on one. They are heavy and require both hands, leaving no room for defence, and leaving you open to attack from your blindspots. Also, a chainsaw will remove approx 4lbs of flesh per second, the splatter and chance of bio transfer at close range would be enourmous.
You are also in survival conditions- a chainsaw requires a fuel source, and its weight makes carrying it energy inefficient.

Looking at it in reality, the chainsaw is a poor choice of zombie defence.

I thought about that before when playing a zombie game...would the undead be bleeding? other than the dormant blood supply stored at the time of death, there wouldn't be spurting or anything would there? think of autopsy's. sure there would be gore and splatter from a shotgun blast or chainsaw - but wouldn't it be significantly less? I don't plan to experiment...just wondering for movie/game realism sake.

I am surprised that for close quarter combat, no one has suggested the neo-wolverine approach. Kevlar body suit with blades attached to gauntlets so to leave the hands free for grabbing or holding other weapons when necessary. Maybe have razors or blade assemblies on the boots (sides, front, and heel) in case you needed to kick and other strategic locations like shoulders, back, and outer thighs where you would most likely be grabbed.

Once close quarter offensives were over, peel down to the kevlar body suit and get ready for distance fighting with ranged weapons.

Just a thought or maybe I have read one too many comics. Seems feasible though.

im sure it would still be worth a shot.. id say use a chainsaw with a riot suit similar to the one the dad wore in 28 days later..
im assuming that you could only turn into one via bite/scratch

Well, the blood would have congealed, thats true, but think about the spray of wood chips you get using one for its intended task. Now imagine revving up a saw and plunging it into a punchbag filled with bacon and strawberry jelly. Thats one hell of a dry cleaning bill you got there, and without total coverage via PPE, you are going to get it in the nostrils, around the mouth, on the hands etc- all areas where absorption, either through ingestion (you breath heavy in fight or flight) or small wounds is very likely.

i agree with razor about the protective suit idea, though I would go for fine link chain mail (like they use for shark suits)and kevlar enforced gloves (more articulation).
As for blades or objects incorporated into the clothing, shoulder spikes and spiked gauntlets (a la legion of Doom/The Misfits) may help keep distance between zombies and your neck, forearms, and shins (film evidence has shown these to be favoured targets of opertunity for the undead).
