I was sparring with a friend back in early June, he threw a kick and stupid me opened my hand on the block. It screwed my thumb up enough to where it still hurts. Just wondering what people think about me hitting the next mma tournament, or waiting and getting my thumb fixed.

You hurt it in early June and it still hurts? Did you go to a doctor yet? Sounds like you may have broken something.

I would go have it checked out.

I think that you should make sure your thumb gets healed up. I have known competitors who went into fights with injuries and the result was an even worse injury. One guy I remember went in with a sprained wrist, and went away with a chronic injury, I don't think he could train for 6 months. There's plenty of time to compete later, you have a duty to stay healthy so that you can fight longer. Go see a doctor if you haven't already.

Sprained wrist? That wasn't too smart. I have an appointment with a specialist on August 3rd. I went in and got x-rays a little bit back. They said it was a "bone protrusion". Whatever that is supposed to mean. I was really curious about what people on tthe site thought. Good answers.

why go 75 % of your ability when you can go 100% next time around?
sparring is one thing, and tournament fighting is another....
go spar hard, but know how to wrap your hand real well, including the thumb and its connector, fight with good form and function. Grapple for movement and fluidity.
Go 100% on your next tournament, when you are @ your best....

Y'know my stupidity is a reason for my being injured. We were sparring with no protection on a hardwood floor with shoes and if there was blood we laughed and shrugged it off. somewhat like that. Ha ha ha

take aim that we are all mortal... we bleed, and we hurt....
sparring is not "to get hurt" but to train "Not" to get hurt... practice wise. One mistake... and it could end your career as a Martial artist...
a friend of mine, died while "horsing" around during pratice in a highschool wrestling match many years ago.
They were in their gear and on padded floor, the guy takes my friend and lays him out. He (my friend) landing wrong on his back was paralyzed for months until he lost control of his breathing and died....all this by just "playing around".....take heed, and be wise at what you do.

Wow, sorry about your friend. I pretty much learned my lesson when I hit him and found my hand hurting worse than he did.

Be it a boxing ring, kickboxing ring, MMA cage or octagon... you can be killed in any of these arenas as a result of your participation.

If you are going to do it, you have got to be 100%. The risk is not worth it.
