I think you are missing the point Mudo, this Rocky is the 'true' sequel to the first two movies in regards to mood and concept.
Rocky 1 was about a journeyman club fighter who was already past his prime getting an incredible chance based on his name alone. He didnt want to take the opertunity initialy, he lacked confidence, dedication and focus. He was out of shape, smoking, debt collecting and generaly getting by on a good left hook both in and out of the ring. Stallone's performance in Rocky 1 gained him the reputation as potentialy the next Deniro, so good was it considered.
Rocky 2 was resolutely more feel-good, but kept to the spirit of the first movie. It was noticeable that rocky now didnt smoke, his links to organised crime got diluted, he didnt swear, and Pauley went from a real nasty piece of work to a more comic character.
Rocky's 3 and 4 were completely different in style and content to the first 2 movies. Whilst the finales of 1 and 2 evoked great real fights like Duran vs Hagler, and the rumble in the Jungle, 3 and 4 threw any grasp of realism away with relish, replacing it with superhero levels of punishment. Rocky as a character suffered much the same fate, becoming almost a parody of what he was in the first movie.
Rocky 5 was an attempt to bring things full circle, the trouble was that they didnt know how to do it. rocky as a trainer was never going to work, and the production was too glossy, with execs not having faith in a return to the grit of the first movie. The result was an uncomfortable mish mash that bore a strong resemblance to a made for TV HBO movie, and not a good one at that.
Now,here, in 'Rocky Balboa', we have a world weary warrior, in the wake of his wifes death, just looking for salvation in the only thing he knows. He is an old lion, with no aspirations or illusions as to his ability, yet through another quirk of fate, an opertunity to do more than he could dream presents itself once again. Again he is not in it to win, but to prove he can sustain in the face of what life throws at him.
they have avoided calling it Rocky 6 for a reason. Its a different animal, and i have every confidence that it will be incredible. Stallone does old and weary very well- remember Copland? he was never once outclassed by anyone on screen.
If George Foreman can win a world Title for real at 44 years old, then Rocky can go the distance one more time in my book.
Put that in your doubters pipe and smoke it
