If so your shotokan teacher ought to know about improvised weapons, including pens, if he doesn't, find a new teacher. Boxing coaches usually know about boxing. The entire conception of kobudo (Okinawan) weaponry revolved around being able to adapt to objects at hand. Why are you studying an art like that when you either a) totally disagree with those principles or b) you just don't know what the hell you're talking about but have gone too far now that you can't shut yourself up?

And Its frigging pointless to go to karate to learn self defence if im gonna be a pusy and use a pen. I've never heard of karate being combined martial arts besides wado ryu. Sounds like your school's a bit flaky.

I'm not saying anything against your school...it is what it is.
