I guess the jokes on me, I'm still getting the bok though. I've gone over it many times. I am curious about learning the basics of bjj and this book seems very good in it's illustrations and it's text. Plus it comes with that nifty dvd and the books is only goig to cost me $22 at barnes and nobles.
Oh, I got the book from Simco, but I was joking about the Gracie Self Defense book. I'm sure there's some useful stuff in there. Does anyone have Gene Simco's Master Text book? It's supposedly the "biggest book on BJJ ever" or something. I bought the Encylopedia of BJJ by Machado. It annoys me that the techniques are not indexed and it's difficult to find something specific.
Tek9, you can get Simco's book for about half that price at amazon.com.

Hmm almost half the price really? Will it come with a cd aswell?
I'll check it out, thanks for the info.
Good thing you didn't get the Gracie self defense book. It's nothing special. I just like reading the begging pages, were they clearly say that most of the ground grappling is sport and not real self defense. If you check out the book all the stand up jujutsu techniques are the same as classic jj.

Yup. Got it off Amazon, with the DVD. In like-new condition I might add.

There are much better choices for BJJ instruction than virtually anything by Simco.
Keep looking. All of the Kid Peligro assited books are good choices. Rigan Machado's is good.
Stay away from Simco or Hatmaker for BJJ/ grappling. Just MHO.
I've gotta disagree with you there. I don't think Kid Peligro offers much. Renzo Gracie's Mastering JuJitsu that he did with John Danaher is much better than anything Kid has put out. Gene Simco is alright bookwise but he's a con artist, so not buying from him is probably a good idea. Mark Hatmaker is one of the better authors I've come across, and his sections on conditioning are worth more than some other entire books (such as by Peligro) that I've read. Only Kid Peligro book I recommend is Gracie Way, but it's not an instructional.

Why do you say Simco is a con artist? Is it because of his online training videos? I see he was awarded his black belt for a few years now.

http://www.mma.tv/tuf/index.cfm?ac=ListMessages&PID=1&TID=843939&FID=11 explains that quite well. In short he's a con artist in the person to person instruction department, he makes claims he quite clearly hasn't (and most likely can't) back up, and in his Master Text he covers techniques for Vale Tudo that wouldn't work well in such a situation. The intro book of his with the DVD isn't that bad since it just covers BJJ with a gi, and it's valid in a sport BJJ context. But you might as well not buy it simply because he's dishonest and there are better alternatives out there.
