Ok, so it's been a good while since I've posted here.
In the last month I've lost over 12 pounds of weight - I was in hospital for a couple of weeks (pneumonia followed by chest infection and then, when I thought I was better, the flu).
Now, at just over 6foot, I'm only 142pounds - and looking like a skeleton.

I've been told by the doctors to rest for another week (or 3) before working out again.

But, when I'm recovered: how do I go about putting this weight back on?
Do I just keep doing what I was before I got sick; with the full body workouts 4 days a week or do I change it up into a split porgramme?

I was always a hardgainer - so this has really set me back.

I'm going to start onto the whey protein drinks now - and have to eat a lot more in the next few weeks.

Any tips?

Dont worry, the weight loss was down to short term illness, when you return to your old level of activity, your body will regain that weight naturaly fairly quickly. dont overdo the food, you will just put on fat, and put an unnecessary strain on your organs, that at the moment, need an easy time of it.

Start off slowly with your training, dont just jump back in like you havent had a break. I know it feels awful, but the worst thing you can do is screw yourself up by overdoing it. steady sensible eating and training will see you get back to your pre illness weight remarkably quickly.
Dont panic

You can stick with the full body workouts but I would suggest only 3 days a week for beginner and intermediate to advanced only 2 days a week ... as you won't have to work out as much. To start maybe only do 1 or 2 depending on how you feel. Go slow and work back into it and expect to drop some weight ... which may hurt the ego ... don't I know it. Just take things slow and you will know when you can push it harder just by how you are feeling. Good Luck.

Maintenance, perhaps.

Advanced trainers require a higher intensity of training which inadvertantly leads to a need for more rest.

1st, you are not a hardgainer unless you tell yourself your a hardgainer. (I hate that word)

If you find yourself getting sick frequently try consuming more protein, the immune system uses alot of protein in it. Without the protein, lousy immune system.

While intaking of protein prevents catabolism which in turns weakens the immune system, it does not directly boost the immnue system. The immune system actually depends on a steady intake of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

What you says sounds like John Parillo. While taking proteins may help, the best way is to rest rest rest.

I have no clue who that is, but from my experience when I have at least 100 grams of protein a day in me I dont get sick.
