They are quite good, but if you ever watch the WuShu demonstrations (2 and 3 persons) they often get even more intensse, and contain a similar range of movement, for a sword type weapon often moves the same regardless of 'style'

Both clips are from the Malaysian version of silat. We see this all the time as entertainment at social occasions like weddings, opening ceremonies etc. All pre-arranged. They started training with sticks and after a few hundred practices, graduate to swords and sometimes even done blind folded. Many of them are members of the armed forces.

By the way, the machete is called 'parang' and the title of the second clip "Pentas Parang Panjang" simply means 'Fast Machete Long'

Wow, what nice choreography, but tell me, what does this really have to do with martial arts?

What does this demonstration have to do with the martial arts?

Just little things, like better performance of technique, precision, timing, breathing.

To belittle good clean performance as being just a show is incorrect. The older traditions in the arts, Chinese and Okinawan, almost always had public perforance in their ways.

It pushes students to be better for another thing. It also has a very important way of teaching a student mistakes can hurt you, so don't make them.

I notice that you brought up Wushu earlier, and this is basically the Indonesian equivalent of Modern Wushu. As anyone can tell, this has more to do with athleticism and the ability to act than martial skill. It's just acrobatics with an MA flavor.

I don't know how skilled these guys might actually be, and I'm impressed with there willingness to swing at each other with what is probably live steel, but this doesn't show any actual fighting ability.
