That depends on a lot of factors - have you learned all the required material for the next level? Do you understand it and can you apply it? Etc.
Talk to other students in your school, and see how long it took them.

I agree with Matt. Also, your instructor might not feel you are ready. Be patient, practice hard, and when your instructor feels you are ready you will test.

How is extending your test making money? I pay the same fee whether I test every month of every 6 months.

if your talking about the P-level grades, my instructor explained it as it takes bout 3 months to reach P1, and then after that an additional 6 months to reach each subsequent level. so see where you are in about 3 months? im in basically the same position, its been about 8 months or so, so im gearing up for my P2 grading now :-)
good luck and hapyp training

6 months is a bit long to still be at level one, I tested for mine after 3 months. However, as was said, maybe your instructor feels you are not ready yet. Even if you can apply the skills, you may not yet be physically ready yet. I know I was anxious to take my test to move to level 2, but I was lucky to have passed the gruelling physical torture of getting there. I don't know how they test where you are, but at my school, a huge part of the testing was also your combat conditioning that played a large part.

Yeah, I'll be testing for mine after only 7 or 8 weeks (test coming next fortnight yay!!), but I"ve prior experience with self-defence work, so this is all review for me pretty much...my two mates (both P1 level) are getting ready for their P2 test after being at P1 for about 6 months...so I think that's about right
Also, their may be some minor differemces for people; e.g. how often you training; how long training sessions are; minor alterations to syllabus material etc.

Hi,
I think it depends on what cirriculum you are doing. If you are doing the LA Krav cirriculum, it is supposed to take at least 6 months going 2-3x per week until you are ready to test for level 2 from what I've been told. For many people it takes this long to learn control, which gets more important as you move up to sparring. Also, the level two classes are much more challenging from a technical standpoint, so it is important to make sure you are totally grounded in the level 1 techniques.
At our school the instructors decide if you are ready to test, but they never try to hold people back who look ready. They don't make any more money if you test now or later, and I think it is assumed that you are taking Krav for "the long haul" not just taking Krav for a year or something.
Like everyone else said, ask the people at your facility and find out how often they offer belt tests. If the test isn't for a long time ask the instructor if you can take some level two classes in the mean time.
Good luck!

Again I agree with all of the previous posts. If you feel you want to advance quicker than train harder and go more oftenly. Remember to also focus on conditioning, which becomes even more grueling in P2. Also, dont let the quickness of advancing dictate your actions. You are training to survive and suceed, not just to get to the next level. Also be glad that your school isnt a "Black Belt Factory" (only applied to KM) because they seem to be truly monitioring your level and preparing you to move on, sometimes lacked in many dojos.
