Here's a good site to check out.

http://www.insidemartialarts.tv/

It's a downloadable show that covers differente aspects of martial arts each week. Why did it post it here? Because episode 5 contains a behind-the-scenes look at a combatative called VForce. For those of you who are located on Long Island (this means you Cronin), it's a worthwhile system and I think this show does good by it. Anyway, the downloadable shows are fine in their own right. Hopefully there's something for everybody.

Looks alot like wing chun to me, noticed during the multiple attacker segment he did a move quite similiar to a Hakutsuru White Crane technique I seen Hohan Soken demonstrating and talking about using against multiple attackers.

http://www.geocities.com/suiken000/haku2.gif

And also on the segment for womens self defense where he shows the balance and stability thing with the hands shooting up.... almost identical to the first move in Kusanku kata.

Which is also very similar to Tony Blauers spear as part of the startle flinch conversion

Great stuff, GuitarNinja. Love the links. Very perceptive of you to recognize Tommy's stance. If you visit his website, www.vforcesfc.com, you'll read he grounded his program in Wing Tsun.

I know the segment on women's self-defense was just a demonstration, but I hope there's more to it. Allow me to explain.

I recall reading about a combatative instructor's experience at a women's seminar (he was just a spectator). The women instructors had their students execute a series of moves on a padded would-be assailant. The combatative instructor found fault with the instructors' teaching methods. He asked why doesn't the assailant hit back? The women instructors claimed that the assailant will be too busy trying to block the shots. The combatative instructor cried wolf.

I agree. It's dangerous and foolish to assume the assailant will not try to strike back. The real hope is that your opponent will be in pain to the point of shock and won't think about striking back because he's concentrating on said pain. But in an enraged state, we can block out the pain and plenty of cops will tell you that they've encountered criminals who remained unphased after a quick swift kick in the balls. The point is don't expect your series of moves will go unanswered in a real encounter. That's where I find fault with the segment.

wow great link link. i like the website and the free video casts. one comment on vforce though. doesn't it kind of look like bs? some of his techniques looks so impractical and the blind folded bit was pure theater.

i don't know them personally. maybe there's more to it...
it worth a good chuckle i guess.

Im only assuming from personal experience against someone using the same exact techniques and methods he was. It works, if he is as fluid and as good as he looks against more resisting opponents, then its effective.

Everything works really, its just a matter of knowing how to work it. Dont use a hammer to turn a bolt, dont plug your fork into a socket.

i'm just bored today and yapping so don't take my opinion to heart...

"Everything works really, its just a matter of knowing how to work it." While I like the positive outlook, it seems to me that everything in fact does not work. If we collect enough data we'll see trends. Certain techniques are more effective. While I may think little of one technique and somebody else may favor it, we can all agree that the stunt with the blind fold is merely trickery bullshido nonsense. I wouldn't suggest he try it surrounded by real fighters!

Yes, I agree with that. Some arts and techniques are more effective than others.

Regarding Vforce, just like a lot of videos I've seen on the web, they are pure demonstrations, not unlike an instructional video. I wouldn't judge his whole school based on that segment, just like I don't condemn the segment on women's self-defense for certain reservations I've had, as it was also a demonstration and the instructor is reknowned for teaching women how to defend themselves.

Put it this way, his school is NOT bs. He's been praised in the combatative community by other reputable programs. There's a school in NYC which is certified to teach Jim Wagner's program, in addition to their own, and they recommend Tommy's school if you live on Long Island. So for my money, he's the real deal. And unlike some other instructors, whether they teach combatatives or traditional-based martial arts, Tommy's a marine and has been to war; so, he definitely has some real life fighting experience.

But I do understand how the demonstrations come off looking like theatre. There are too many "masters" out there who are only interested in your wallet. If I had never heard of VForce beforehand, I'd be just as skeptical of you and critical of said demonstrations.

Based on the video, I would tend to agree with your initial assessment. But I have seen much worse......even endorsed by supposedly reputable "names". A good reason to use your own critical eye rather than exclusively buying into someone else's recommendation.

I wholeheartedly agree with trusting one's own judgement. If one is skeptical of a martial arts program, then the best course of action is research and follow up in-person.

For instance, I heard of this program in my area called AttackProof!. I visited the website and it looked real promising. It had a bunch of testamonials and stuff. It looked like the real deal. Then I checked up with someone from NYC who teaches combatatives (realfighting.com, the same place certified to teach Jim Wagner's program) and he basically said the program is okay but you could do better. Some of his students trained at AttackProof! and even the students felt indifferent, which is among the reasons why most of them sought training elsewhere. I mean, compared to the realfighting program, those former students of AttackProof! felt it offered superior training. How do I know that? I traveled to the school and talked with a couple of former students of AttackProof!, coincidently.

Everyone is free to think what they want, ostensibly. If one doesn't believe a recommendation citing a martial arts school, that's his or her decision. For me, the best recommendation I can offer for those in the Long Island area is it's endorsed by a reputable combatative officially certified to teach Jim Wagner's program. For those not in the know, Wagner is arguably and virtually synonymous with combatatives; he's a modern pioneer. Now if that can't convince a person that the school is at least worth a look, nothing will.
