If a child lives with criticism,
She learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
He learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
She learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame,
He learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
She learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
He learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
She learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
He learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
She learns to have faith.
If a child live with approval,
He learns to like himself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,
He learns to find love in the world.

If it helps to narrow it down, I know it was neither of my parents.

To be serious though, although that piece of writing is great and, in the main, true, I know many exceptions. I know people who had quite appalling childhoods who turned out ok and made good parents themselves.

Yup. Whenever one of my kids complains that I'm (insert teenager complaint of choice here) I tell them:

'I'm just trying to make sure you go to college and get a good paying job. Then you can afford a therapist...and tell him all about your crappy mother.'

Ananda said:
"Friendship with what is lovely, association with what is lovely, intimacy with what is lovely--that is half of the holy life."

The Buddha responded:
"Don't say that, Ananda. It's the whole, not the half of the holy life. One so blessed with what is lovely will develop a right way of being, a thinking that no longer grasps at what is untrue, an aim that is concerned and ready, a contemplation that is unattached and free. Association with what is lovely is the whole of the holy life." -Samyutta Nikaya.
