I checked out a reputable BJJ school in Canada that produced some good fighters in muay thai and MMA.

I have a question about something the club representative said..he said they train BJJ the American version.

Is there really an American version of BJJ, if so what's the difference from the Brazilian version?

No. Brazillian JJ is oddly enough, Brazillian

Anyone that tells you otherwise is twisting things. Kind of like if someone tried to sell you a Iraqi "Ford".. Iraqi's don't make Fords... or American "Beer", Americans don't know how to make beer

It certainly depends on what they mean by "American version". It is likely that it is a subtle reference to their instructors being non Brazilian, or believing that they are somehow more modern and evolved than "Old School" BJJ.

In any case, people can call it what they want. BJJ continues to evolve and if what they are doing was BJJ, it likely still is.

Interesting. I have never heard of "American" Brazilian Jujitsu. Maybe they they focus more on no-gi techniques?

Tough to tell.

I don't really see how there COULD be a difference unless it's like Matt said - they focus on the no-gi side.

Otherwise "it's all wrestling". There are only so many ways to do the same thing.

They train no Gi and they use Greco-Roman wrestling for takedowns and warm up.

I was told also Gary "big daddy" Goodridge trained at this gym.

Thanks guys.
