Quote:

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963

I find this to be very true and I've witnessed it as well. When the pressure is on the true self will be revealed.

Hmmm....

Quote:

The measure of man is what he does with power.

Quote:

In the end, it seems, the lasting measure of a man is not what society thinks of him but what his actions teach him that he is. We forge our own destinies, take our own measures, and cannot face hardships or seek the meaning of life without by degrees becoming whatever we expect to find.

Quote:

The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. by Samuel Johnson.

Quote:

The old man died, and the scribes who record
the lives of men in the Book of Ages
came to measure his life, and to set it down.

“How shall we measure the life of a man?”
the youngest of them inquired.
“By the passage of his days,”
the first one said, as he made his entry.
“By his deeds, great and small,” another replied.
“By the wealth that he amassed,” said yet another,
“Or by the power that he held,” the fourth one suggested.

“But which way is best?” the youngest one wondered.
“There are many good ways and true,”
the wisest one answered,
“And each scribe is free to choose,”
“But the most telling,” he noted, as he took out his pen,
“Is by the love in the hearts of those who knew him…”

vvv

In memory of my father, Bernard Seligman

Quote:

Thomas B. Macaulay The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Quote:

The measure of a man is not his strength or skill, but the ability to keep and hold his promises.

I can't remember where I heard that last one or even if it is a direct quote.

There seems to be many different ways of looking at it. Almost as many is there is people.

What is your view or favorite quote on this?

Nice collection,

I like the "love in the hearts of those who knew him".

Can't recall where I got them but I like these (second one is a bit like the one "how he treats someone who can do him no good at all"

"Pressure makes diamonds"

"Judge your potential business partner not by how he treats his equals but how he treats the waitress at a business lunch"

The Measure of a Man is not if he falls...but how he gets up.

(Now, I think I invented that...but probably heard it somewhere.)

I think of it as a 'folding in'...better than a bump!

Besides, nothing is ever the same.

Sorry for the late response, but i just found the thread...

The mother of a girl I once dated passed away from cancer, had the following on her tombstone. I have never read a more touching and fundamentally telling epitath in my life.

The greatest testament to the life I have lived is that some very beautiful people loved me.

Galen,

That IS beautiful. It's all the more beautiful in that it sounds as if the lady chose it for those who remained...
